The deviantART community is full of talented artists and art appreciators willing to pay for custom artwork. Today, we’re excited to announce that we’re launching Commissions on deviantART to all Beta Testers, a feature that connects artists with clients, creating custom artwork in exchange for real earnings.

Commissions is a Profile Page widget that allows artists to market their talents by advertising what they are available to create. Potential clients can easily send artists a Commission request, which an artist can either accept or reject.

Profits made through the Commissions widget can be withdrawn as real earnings -- through check, PayPal, or converted to deviantART Points.

Generate Real Earnings Through Custom Creations

1. List Commission availability on your profile
The Commissions Widget showcases your offerings, showing potential clients that you are accepting requests. These commission prices are based on deviantART Points , are set in increments of 10, and can range from 10 to 4000 Points.

2. Clients request Commissions
Commission requests are sent to the artist’s Message Center, allowing them accept or reject the request.

3. You receive payment, you deliver artwork
Artists can track their Commission transactions and generate real profit through My Earnings , garnering 80% royalty on each transaction. Earnings can then be withdrawn as a check, PayPal, or converted to deviantART Points.

Try it out!

All Beta Testers can now install the Commissions widget on their page, so give it a try by heading to your Profile ! Installed Commissions widgets are visible to everyone on deviantART, so you can offer your own commissions, and you can request commissions from your fellow artists as well!

Please note: Currently, the Commissions widget can only be installed by Beta Testers, but everyone has the ability to request a Commission from Beta Testers during this testing period.

If you encounter any bugs or issues, please file them in the #devBUG  Issue Tracker under the Commissions  project.

I think there should be some sort of security for the person buying such as maybe a half and half

pay the first half of the commission price when it is accepted then the other half when you receive the finished piece

I have one question. Why the 20% point reduction? Just curious.

I would understand if the Points had any specific worth outside of deviantart, but since Points only work inside of dA, I feel it's rather unnecessary.

I love this website alot, but this is one of the quirks that needs to be worked out.

At first I wasn't too happy that deviantart takes some of your earnings, but then when I found out that you could actually withdraw points into real currency for the first time it didn't bother me nearly as much

Though it might be nice if the cut was a bit smaller. I doubt nearly as many people would be annoyed with 10% instead of 20%, but perhaps that is a bit cheap...

I have a problem. I installed the widget, put prices, title, and desciripton and clicked save. When it comes out up though, the "Request Commission" button is gone and only says the amount I put it for. It also says * Editing will disable your ability to accept any pending requests of this commission.* What does this mean?
Please reply.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

ikazon In reply to IcePhoenix202 [2013-02-26 00:54:53 +0000 UTC]

Hi there! The "Request Commission" button won't show up for you, since you're the one who's listed the commissions. When you edit a Commission in the widget and save changes, it will automatically cancel any pending correspondence requests you have in your message center for that particular commission listing. Anyone who had a pending request prior to your editing can still try to request a new one, but that way all involved parties can be sure that the contract being agreed to is clear.

The fee is way too high, and is impractical for anyone who isn't a purely digital artist. Move closer to an etsy pricing scheme and allow us to set actual prices in real money instead of points and it would work a lot better. Also, adding the ability to add shipping charges, upgrades etc would help.

Ravenskysong In reply to ??? [2013-02-21 04:41:40 +0000 UTC]

I agree, 20% for a widget you have to subscribe to use in the first place is ridiculous. Now, if it was no percent for subscribers and say 10% for non subscribers it would be ok.

It is nice to see deviantart moving in new directions, but trying to mask a money making gimmick as something it's not is a smack in the face.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sunnycat17 In reply to Ravenskysong [2013-05-02 16:28:14 +0000 UTC]

Agreed.
Not to mention we already GAVE them the money FOR the points, and after that the points really have no worth other than to buy a Premium Membership or a commission so that the person you gave the points can keep their premium.

And a 10% point reduction for non premium users? That would be great, as it would let them still use the widget out of fairness.

DeathInTheReaper In reply to ??? [2013-02-13 00:56:55 +0000 UTC]

I am extremely disappointed in DA for charging 20% of every commissions transaction received through this widget. That is outrageous. Not to mention we would still have to take paypal's fees into account. You guys are out of your minds if you think this is fair. I understand the ease of this and how nice is is for people who only have points to commission artists who only accept real money, but for that convenience it is not worth you gouging us artists that much money. Considering this is an art community DA of all places should understand that no one can make any sort of decent money off this widget with that 20% fee in place. I know you guys need to make money to cover your costs and pay your employees, but 20% of far too much. And I sincerely hope no one uses the widget until you significantly lower your fees (no more over 5% preferably).

Why not take a smaller chunk, or not take one at all from a subscriber? I mean honestly paying for a subscription is becoming almost not worth it if I can't even avoid the slap in the face of the commissions widget fee. Why not make it a 3.5% fee (which is what Etsy charges for transactions)? That will still get you plenty of money and it won't leave the community with a bad taste in it's mouth.

I thought DA wanted to help out the little guy, not step all over us like we're insignificant.

DeathInTheReaper In reply to BWPhotographry [2013-02-25 04:38:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah that's not really much considering I haven't bought anything from their devwear shop. I can't afford it. Even with the discount. And if they're going to suck 20% of my profits from commissions, on top of the paypal fees you would also incur from the money transfer, then forget it. I'm going to just do it the old way and hope DA get their heads out of their asses. >.>

To $wreckling

Do I need to wait for the pending status on the "my earnings" page to clear to get the points??? I remember when this first came out for the beta testers, I thought there was something that said that once the commissioner got the finish product, they could click something for the points to be sent, even though the points had already been deducted from the commissioner.

I hope I'm not bothering you, Thanks.

Hey there! That is correct, you have to wait for the 14 day period to end before you can withdraw your earnings, regardless of which method you choose in order to withdraw. The 14 day period begins when you accept the commission, as that's when the points are taken from the buyer's account.

So, I don't quite understand this. I installed the Commission widget, and set up all my prices, and got 3 sales. But, so far, I can't deduct it from My Earnings. Its labeled under 'Pending Transactions' and I don't understand how to work this. I made the commisions, but I'm not getting paid the points... its very confusing.

ikazon In reply to Fluffuu [2013-02-04 21:29:24 +0000 UTC]

Hey there! There is a 14 day period in between when you accept the commission and when you can withdraw the earnings, to ensure that purchases being made are not fraudulent. Once that 14 day period has passed, you can withdraw your earnings.

Fluffuu In reply to ikazon [2013-02-04 21:31:57 +0000 UTC]
