The deviantART community is full of talented artists and art appreciators willing to pay for custom artwork. Today, we’re excited to announce that we’re launching Commissions on deviantART to all Beta Testers, a feature that connects artists with clients, creating custom artwork in exchange for real earnings.

Commissions is a Profile Page widget that allows artists to market their talents by advertising what they are available to create. Potential clients can easily send artists a Commission request, which an artist can either accept or reject.

Profits made through the Commissions widget can be withdrawn as real earnings -- through check, PayPal, or converted to deviantART Points.

Generate Real Earnings Through Custom Creations

1. List Commission availability on your profile
The Commissions Widget showcases your offerings, showing potential clients that you are accepting requests. These commission prices are based on deviantART Points , are set in increments of 10, and can range from 10 to 4000 Points.

2. Clients request Commissions
Commission requests are sent to the artist’s Message Center, allowing them accept or reject the request.

3. You receive payment, you deliver artwork
Artists can track their Commission transactions and generate real profit through My Earnings , garnering 80% royalty on each transaction. Earnings can then be withdrawn as a check, PayPal, or converted to deviantART Points.

Try it out!

All Beta Testers can now install the Commissions widget on their page, so give it a try by heading to your Profile ! Installed Commissions widgets are visible to everyone on deviantART, so you can offer your own commissions, and you can request commissions from your fellow artists as well!

Please note: Currently, the Commissions widget can only be installed by Beta Testers, but everyone has the ability to request a Commission from Beta Testers during this testing period.

If you encounter any bugs or issues, please file them in the #devBUG  Issue Tracker under the Commissions  project.

shoily In reply to GoldenEmotions [2013-02-04 16:42:43 +0000 UTC]

You could just price it so you can make up for it....like instead of thinking 80 is 1 dollar, you can think 100 is 1 dollar! And at least points can be used usefully now.... Believe me when I say this is useful... every other change dA has made is really ticking me off, like the submit page

GoldenEmotions In reply to shoily [2013-02-04 17:40:17 +0000 UTC]

Oh well, I never ment to say the idea is bad. I simply disagree with the fee. It's unneccesary, and the positive about journals is that you can share them, for example by uploading them to groups. When it comes to the widget you need to say 'look at my page to find the widget to see what I offer'. And that is a big minus, because people want to get all they need to know with the smallest amount of time. So I think there still are some reasons against this widget. But I confess, this feature is a lot less bad than the others DA recently added. : )

But let's not start complaining about that horrible upload page. DA doesn't give a shit about their user, and they won't change it back anyway. >.>

Not sure that this would classify as a bug report, but I wanted to give a little feedback. So far, I have had two commissions via this tool. It has been really handy as I have never updated my commissions journal properly and my profile is a jumble to navigate looking for my commissions. I think it looks neat and clean, plus I can use the same widget codes to spruce it up a bit.

So, everything is going fairly smoothly. I am still waiting for the first commission to clear. Here is my issue, I want to be able to post updates, WIPs and receive feedback from the client on the commission thread so I don't have a jumble of notes to weed through to find a particular comment, etc. The problem is that I will post and the client does not get notified of the post. So they have to manually check their correspondence messages to see if it says # of comments. Many people may just clear out these notifications so may not have access to them in any handy manner.

To all the people complaining about dA's Premium Content Platform share of profits... If you compare this service with other sales oriented platforms such as eBay, Amazon, Etsy, GraphicRiver... You will find that dA's costs may actually be better. A friend uses Graphicriver and they take a sizable chunk out of the costs. Amazon, Etsy and eBay all have listing fees. I'm not sure what ArtFire or the one that starts with a Z and some red something or other charges. But I would bet it is comparable. The main difference here is that you can easily accept for your commissions and choose how you get paid out. You already have a huge customer base who is already buying/selling/trading via dA points. 20% is not a huge chunk, when you compare it to the alternatives. Yes, you can always accept PayPal commissions through e-mail, etc and yada yada. This new system is convenient for both the commissioner and the artist to transact quickly and easily.

Normally, I discuss back and forth how they plan to pay, then if via points I wait for them to send the agreed upon amount, if via PayPal I'd e-mail them an invoice... When communicating over the internet, it can be a very long and drawn out process just doing the payment set up. This takes care of that so you can begin the long process of back and forth communication with your clients and not worry about the payment. You have already been paid, once you hit accept you can begin work and not worry that you will get shortchanged. I'm not certain how refunds work, but after the 14 day period, you can return their payment manually.

I welcome this addition to the Premium Content Platform, as I was already looking for a way to set it up through PCP deviations. Which I never really figured a clean way to do that. I was over complicating it... So far, I am happy with the new system. I have commission orders that I was not receiving before via my buried journal posts and people who come to my site know immediately that I have commissions available.

ComicBookGaz In reply to ??? [2013-01-21 09:30:30 +0000 UTC]

So you're capping the value of potential art for sale at around $50, you take a fifth of the profits and you expect professional artists to actually make a living and/or profit off of this, let alone use it at all, when it's not even necessary to begin with?

Yeah, watch the use of this skyrocket. There is quite literally zero benefit to using this widget at all and no one is going to use it.

And although it'd obviously be the largest, most unrealistic move ever to forbid commissions outside of the use of this widget for a variety of reasons, it would be literally impossible to enforce that rule. Anybody can just arrange any other way of going about that, and easily arrange anything outside of the confines of such a widget.

I wouldn't put it past dA trying to do that on the grounds of greed. I would put it past them on the grounds that there's no way to enforce it, at all. It's not going to happen.

monstash In reply to ComicBookGaz [2013-01-24 18:58:20 +0000 UTC]

Several people are already using it, and it's mainly used for convenience.
It's easily manageable, and it gathers all the data in one place. Also it displays things clearly so that users can navigate and read the data displayed quickly and easily rather than going through some dumb listing that is confusing for any literate person to read.

Go pick something else about dA to bitch about. This is a genuine idea.

I thought this was a good idea at first, but I'd never use it if DA is taking a 20% cut. That is WAY too high for an addition to a service that I already pay for.

A lot of other non-premium users think it's useful. I personally have never tried it, I do want to try it out and pick which side I'm on, but I think it does cut down on the complications of making payments, but the wait is a bit long if it's an emergency.

I also have a request but consider this as optional. Instead of deviants making a custom box for queue like the one i did in my page, give us an option to show the customer's queue and probably three settings:
1. icon or deviant name or both
2. note/message box - user specified for each entry
3. title option with it to place w/e message we want:
4. sort options - sort by name/commission date(/specific but i believe that would be too much work, im imaginging a small width textbox at the side to set the ordering number)

pseudo code example:

Commission type 1 500 points
List:
devianticon - work in progress
devianticon2 - pending
devianticon3 - pending *special

Commission type 2 1500 points
List:
devianticon - pending
devianticon - pending

I also noticed there's no way to cancel the commissions, is that how it's supposed to work? That's all, thanks!

I'm having an issue with the program... Someone purchased a critique from me, but it says I've sold none... I don't quite understand why this is... Also, while I was working on the commission, I was unable to use the comment feature to communicate with the client... Are these just bugs, or the way things were meant to be?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

James--Steele In reply to FreckledAndFearless [2013-01-13 02:30:37 +0000 UTC]

Have you edited the info? When you edit it, it deletes the amount of commissions already sold. (source: On my widget, it says I've sold 0 critiques, but I've already sold 7 )

On the second part, it seems that the My Correspondence page was rushed (to my knowledge), so I think it's still quite buggy. You can report the bugs you find to the Help Desk. (please remember to take lots of screenshots! )

Speaking of commissions...
Attention Please!

This is a critical situation here- =R-no71 is in a serious financial situation and could be kicked out of her home to the streets any day now. She's opened up commissions to pay for it and to save herself from having to live on the streets. Please, if anyone can, commission her. She has very high skilled and high quality artwork- you will not regret commissioning. Even if you can not commission, at least help her advertise. Do a good deed!: [link]

James--Steele In reply to ??? [2013-01-08 14:52:12 +0000 UTC]

I'm actually fine with the 20% now, because I'm not offering commissions above 20 so I only lose 4 points.

Now, I tested it out personally on one of my alts. I gave them 20 points, commissioned myself, and then accepted the commission on this account. I then went back to the alt account to see if there were any notifications. The only notification was on the original notice that I had accepted it. I'd prefer a separate notification that the user has accepted your commission (because I usually delete commission notices before they're accepted by habit).

One of my main suggestions for improvement is a comment box in your commission notice. (sta.sh preview: [link] ) I'd like the ability to communicate with the client through the commission platform. I shouldn't have to note them when already everything is neatly packed here.

Also, it would be nice for the cap to be raised just a bit higher. Maybe people paying for a premium subscription can alter the cap to however high they want? Or maybe raise it to 10k points? (Just throwing out a number)

Thanks!
~James

Zagittorch In reply to ??? [2013-01-08 08:39:27 +0000 UTC]

I don't mind the 20% cut, especially since I plan on using this for people who pay with points, and because I've made the prices higher to make my earnings just as I would through other methods.

I was wondering, where exactly do we make suggestions to improve the widget and discuss about them? devBUG seems to be there only to bring attention to, you know, bugs.

I personally believe deviantART should work on a system that would allow a possible client to browse through several people's commission adds from the widget, much like browsing deviations or journals/news. Though in order to properly do it, each commission add would have to be categorized, I don't think this would be complicated seeing how the categories would be the same as the gallery's - maybe slightly less specific.

This will provide a greater service to those who are selling, as advertising, and to those who're looking to buy, obviously.

It'd make for a much better reason to charge 20% of people's winnings.

Onto the pricing... I believe the 4000 pts cap should be allowed to be higher, perhaps for premium members only? Or senior users.

bohobella In reply to Zagittorch [2013-01-08 09:00:16 +0000 UTC]

This suggestion is the best thing since slight bread, I highly endorse it

I'd love the cap to be higher for premium members. Since senior is such a special status of somewhat random earning, it wouldn't be fair I feel to give them a edge in profiting or what have you.

Zagittorch In reply to bohobella [2013-01-08 09:01:58 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeeeah with senior I meant old active members, I had forgotten seniors are called seniors.

Like, the cap goes higher for every year your account has been relatively active.

Well... Looks kinda nice. Except the fee's amount. I understand that it's somewhat rude not to pay for services and the free advertisement space the site provides and beacause of the site's popularity they could pull it off (unfortunately I guess?). But wth, they want to make more money.

Though if I want to draw professionally in MY country WITHOUT getting penalised for it, I'd have to pay 38-45%(?) of my income to the goverment (that's several taxes added together and it could be as high as 60% IF there are more kind of stuff I need to do to just not get a fee for simply offering my services..). Not talking about base materials and food.

$wreckling said himself in a reply to another user, that the widget will not be forced upon anyone and is your choice if you would like to use it.

deviantart gets rich (or already is) and artists stay poor. Especially if everyone keeps asking just 5 points for their art.

I'm more on the opinion that DA is a good place to advertise my stuff, but it would hardly ever get me rich wether they help me or not and I don't intend to entirely live of what I get from DA commissions. Besides, I've seen some site hosted competitions wich - provided artists who see them really want to get somewhere and apply for them - are really good headstarts. If they get filthy rich in the process thanks to a good marketing, then wath the hell. Hopefully that'll mean more competitions with money prize and opportunities to get to learn/work aboard.

And who said I'm only asking 5 points for my work?
