Description This shows how I made my crown for my Princess Peach costume I am working on at the moment.

Materials used:

- Worbla
- Resin
- Transulent glass paint in pink and blue
- Spray-Putty
- Brown acrylic paint
- Gold decoration spray paint
- Matte varnish
- Sticker crystals and pearls
- Air dry clay
- Sandpaper
- Brush

- For the base I used Worbla, but you can also use wonderflex (or other types of thermo plastic) or foam. I attached the edges on each other and shaped the Worbla by using hot water. The material will stick on each other by heating it up.

- With a soldering iron I added the edge on the crown.

- To smooth out the crown I have sprayed spray putty on it, let it dry for a few hours and sanded it slightly.

- I casted the gems on the crown with clear resin. I used a drop of transulent glass paint to color them and a base mold for resin which you can find in craft stores.

- After the resin was fully harded out after a day, I glued mirror foil on the backside and then on the crown with super glue . I used air dry clay for adding/ finishing the edges.

- I sealed the resin stones with masking tape and spray painted the crown gold and let it dry for a few hours.

- I used very small sticker crystals and pearls so I didn't need to use glue to put it on the crown. This is faster and saver to avoid glue being visible.

- For the worn out look I used brown acrylic paint which I thinned out with water. I used a piece of cloth and rubbed it over the crown until the crown was fully covered. I used a clean cloth to rub off the paint, the paint will remain in the edges of all the details which gives the crown a more classic look. You can also use the dry brushing technique for this result.

- For sealing everything I used 2 layers of matte varnish.

And it is done!

Tips:

- For being able to shape Worbla you can also use a hairblower, heatgun or oven.
- Be careful with the soldering iron, you can make holes in the material with it easily.
- If there will be some paint on the resin stones, don't worry you can get rid of it with acetone/ nailpolish remover.
- Drill smal holes in the crown to be able to sew the crown on a wig.

I hope this tutorial will help you out with your future projects.

Just a question...what kind of resin did you use for this crown? And what kind would you recommend for durability, and what materials would you recommend for a place like Florida in the United States, that is, a place that can be either hot and humid or hot and dry? See, Florida is not just hot, but it can easily get humid and rainy, and it can just as easily get horrendously dry instead. We can get hurricanes, thunderstorms, rainstorms, and droughts here, in addition to sunny weather or good weather... It can be sunny, then rain for a couple of hours, then sunny once more in the same day. It can even get hot and humid without rain, too. The weather changes pretty quickly here.

So, what would your advice be?

Iloon-Creations In reply to Midday-Mew [2014-07-12 23:08:54 +0000 UTC]

Sounds almost exactly like the Dutch climate xD

Just do what I did, as it is the savest method for any circumstance I know.

Resin for the stones is clear polyester resin. Any brand will do the job.
What I have used to reinforce the worbla with by coating it, is Smooth-Cast 300 from Smooth-On. It is an American brand so I think it is not that hard to get gor you.

Smooth-Cast 300 is like regular resin a 2 component product which hards out like plastic. You have to work fast with it as it hards out quickly.

I did get my stuff at craft stores. I used a drop of glass paint mixed through the resin to color them. There are many brands of it. Prices variates a lot, depending on the brand which is different in each country. The resin is a home brand from my place and cost around 15 euro's. The glass paint is from the brand Decorfin and cost around 5 euro's for 50 ml.

hello, i love this crown! i have a couple questions though...

do you have approximate dimensions on the pieces of the crown? or a stencil? i have no idea how big to make them.
also, what is the gold ring around the resin stones made of?

thanks a lot!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Iloon-Creations In reply to janedoe-xox [2013-09-11 19:47:37 +0000 UTC]

Hey thank you very much!

The dimensions of each piece is 7.5 cm width and 7.5 cm high.

The rings around the gems are sculpted by hand with air dry clay.

Hey again,

There's no spray putty in my country. The putty that we have is very thick and comes in a tube only. Any other suggestions for what to cover it with?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Iloon-Creations In reply to janedoe-xox [2013-10-11 23:50:01 +0000 UTC]

You can use PVA glue (wood glue) to smooth out the surface. Thin it out with a little bit of water and add a few layers with a brush.

Iloon-Creations In reply to Kyra-Usagi [2013-08-05 19:09:49 +0000 UTC]

I my country I am able to get it at a Home Depot. I am able to get 2 brands, Albastine and Motip which I used here. I don't know what they have in other countries...

Matte Varnish is also available at a Home Depot (spray variant), or hobby/craft stores.

I love your tutorial and do you think cardboard will work as well (im on a tight budget)

I recommend craft foam over cardboard ^^
Seal the foam first with PVA glue (wood glue) before adding putty and paint.
