I always hesitate to make species tips journals because, who am I to help someone? But I feel I am qualified to help with this!
So backstory timeee, when I started Sky-Dancers , I had less than 100 watchers on this account. They were started in March last year. Since then, the group has gotten more members than I have watchers haha! I say knowledge of business psychology really helps. You will always find people who like your species naturally, but some people need convincing. Which is ok! That's what sharing you species is all about <3
So here are some tips on starting up your species. Sorry for typos, Im typing on my phone.
1. Accept failure, but not easily
Sometimes you think you have a good idea. You are so proud of this idea. But nobody likes it after a good 5/6 months of effort... You may be blinded by a bad idea. Accept it, and keep thinking and creating until you find your idea that you are passionate about.
2. CARE
Everyone who makes species tips journals says this, because guess what? It's true. You have to care about the species and love drawing them or you will almost always end up dropping the species or giving up. Make an interesting logo that you put on all your adopt images. That way, if people keep clicking on the same species images more than once, their brain will subconsciously like the adopts more, as they have seen it in the past.
3. Lore
Your species needs a meaning. A story. Read other peoples lores, see what they cover, get your creative hat on and come up with a plothole-less story that makes sense. For the love of everything in this world, DON'T COPY/HEAVILY USE SOMEONES SYSTEM/LORE. You are looking at others fir inspiration only.
4. Get yourself out there
Once you've got all your ideas ready and finalized, it's time to run. Create a species group with an easy to remember name, easy to understand icon, and organized page that shows all the info you need. Keep the front page short, as people will skim through it in about 5 seconds and you need to grab their attention quickly. Maybe even have some nice drawing to easily show the species and grab attention. Be professional, but not too much. Try to keep everything polished easy to understand and dun typ3 l1k3 dis.
5. Grow
Invite people to your group. Not just anyone though, find people who a) like species b) are active and c) draw anatomy as close as possible to your species often. When people decline, don't get discouraged, it happens to everyone!! Not all people are interested in your species, and that's ok!
6. Share
Post your adopts/raffles/etc. to as many species groups as possible. I used to do over 60 for each deviation when I started, and as my art improved, I lowered it to about 30.
7. Format
This ones important if you ever with to sell adopts. First, a question. Which of these thumbnails grabs your attention?
With the left one, we can clearly see hey, look a DTA, let me check it out! And on the right, you didn't even know it was a DTA, let alone be able to see the anatomy and character since it's so zoomed out.
Let's try again...
Which tiptap catches your attention there? You can't even SEE the first one, how are you supposed to even care?
8. Adopt descriptions make a big difference
Always use as little text as possible, and format as much as you can. Always link to your species group. Always make prices/bid info easy to understand.
9. Haters will be haters
You will always have people that criticize you, and as you grow, you get more. That's how the world works, don't let it bring you down. Always remain calm and professional no matter how ignorant someone else is being.
10. Be social and active
This is my favortie part!! You will make tons of amazing friends as your species grows, and they will be the best people you will meet on this site. Always treat everyone well, be nice, but don't let people take advantage of you. People always do that, without even knowing they are. Don't give out freebies to just anyone or often.
11. Livestream (optional)
The best people I've met, are the people who have been curious enough to join my livestreams. DA is great, but it's so easy to forget that there are people behind these usernames, and time/effort being put into these drawings. Not only that, but it grows your presence and name.
12..... More in the future? Let me know if you want mooore!!!
I really hopes this helps <3

Do you think getting critiques on you species would be a good way to figure out whether your idea is worth pursuingg?

Glad to hear!
Totally, ask friends/watchers what they think before going full force. Do test auctions as well to see what people think about the designs and species itself.
