Description

This is a prime example of laser based small arms technology. It projects beams of coherent light at it's target in short powerful pulses. In terms of simple beam integrity it's maximum effective range is over 500 kilometers. For practical purposes in the hands of a human operate it is deadly up to 4 kilometers on single shot. It has six settings: safety, stun (electrolaser setting, low power beam used to deliver an electrostatic discharge to stun people like a taser), medium power semi automatic (2.5 kilojoules per pulse), medium power three pulse burst, medium power automatic and high power (15 kJ per pulse, semi automatic with a 1 second delay between shot).  Conventional Bullet Proof Vests and other such ballistic body armor is not of much use against laser fire (similarly while armor optimized against laser beams can be made it fares poorly against bullets and shrapnel). The weapon weighs in at 4 kilograms and is powered by a 16 kilogram backpack mounted battery pack able to supply up to 120 High Power pulses. In effect a soldier armed with a Laser Rifle can serve as both a Rifleman, Light Machine Gunner and a Sniper. Protective eye-wear is recommended for soldiers equipped with laser rifles. Pedants who get huffy about it's classification as a rifle despite not having a rifled barrel are advised to find a lemon to suck.

Very well thought and actually plausible design, i love it, 10/10!

A few other possible settings;

Pulsed Energy Projection: a high intensity laser pulse ablates the surface of the target and creates a small amount of exploding plasma. This produces a pressure wave that stuns the target and knocks them off their feet, and electromagnetic radiation that affects nerve cells causing a painful sensation. Basically, one can use a laser to make the air next to a target *explode*. And it's low-lethal, too. Speaking of low-lethal...

Stun: Ionized air conducts electricity like a wire. This setting splits the laser beam and passes it through metal eyelets energized by the weapon's power source. When the ionized beams hit a conductive surface the energy discharges through the target - in effect a wireless taser. This discharge is modulated to disrupt the synaptic refresh of most chordates, rendering the target instantly unconscious with no chance of physical harm save collapse injury.

Blast: Ionized air also can also keep a cloud of plasma - superheated gas as hot as a star - from dissipating. This setting propels a plasma bolt capable of vaporizing several inches of battleship plate down this "plasma channel" at roughly the speed of sound. This plasma must be generated in advance by permitting the weapon to "breathe". When primed and flipped from "safe" to "decidedly unsafe," local atmospheric gases are cycled into the weapon's capacitor, where the same high-energy laser used by the previous settings superheats these gases into a plasma, producing a noticeable acoustic effect that some have defined as an "Ommminous Hummmmm". While this hum is stealth-defeating, many have reported that it serves as an excellent deterrent.

So a laserman can also act as crowd control *and* anti-armor. Why haven't we built these things yet?

The power cell, obviously. We can't even build a battery that will let a smartphone undergo a reasonable level of use for more than one day. Now for this you need something that will provide far more energy, yet be lightweight and rugged enough to handle terrain and combat conditions that most portable electronics will never get near to.

Good ideas, i'll take the electrolaser one. ")

Good work! It was but some days ago, I was thinking of a "realistic" laser rifle, and by "realistic" I mean imagining it from a practical military POV..
I came to the conclusion that I would employ such weaponry in a similar manner to a flamethower . .
