Description
Eros rolled out of the way in her power suit as a anti-matter shot zipped past without a sound and slammed into a marine behind her. She swiftly leaped and rolled behind a wrecked car, its entire length charred. Eros looked back at the unfortunate marine who had received the blow. All she saw was his upper torso on the ground as he tried to feel what was left of his body. He screamed manically as he realized the lower half of his body had been suddenly destroyed when the ant-matter missile impacted on his flesh.Eros looked through the broken glass of the car and saw the bastard. It looked like an oversized black spider, albeit a mechanized one, with five glaring red eyes that formed a loose circle and a much larger sixth one in the center. Its thorax was mounted on four large mechanical legs, while its abdomen was lifted high in the air. Two holes sunk into it, that was where the anti-matter missiles were shot from. And the only place where it could be damaged by small weapons fire.
She slapped a fresh magazine into her M.A.G. (Magnetically Accelerated Gun) pistol, and observed the machine while waiting for backup. She was only a medical officer after all. The Anti-Personnel Fighter, or bugger as the marines called them, clunked its way towards a badly burned corpse, from the looks of it a civilian. It stared at it for a moment, as if registering it was there at all, then proceeded to slam one of its large appendages on the corpse, making wet smacks as it did so. Eros watched as what blood remained splattered against the nearby wall.
Fucking bastard.
She slid her back against the car and stared up at the blotted out sky. Where clouds and bright sun should have been, there was a gigantic and menacing midnight black ship, red lights glowing along its hull. It was a Immortal Class Cruiser, or I.C.C. As she listened for the movements of the uncannily silent machine, numerous blotches fell from its hull. Marauders. Huge quadrupedal machines as big as a six story building that possessed a humongous Sonic Emitter that crushed anything unfortunate enough to be in its path, and three cannons on its bulbous back that fired mortar like anti-matter bolts. As though that was bad enough, teardrop shaped flying machines crawled all over its surface, and became airborne when in battle, firing dark matter at an incredible rate.
Eros remembered first seeing one of the unstoppable death machines in combat, from the roof of a nearby skyscraper where a brief headquarters had been set up. She was sent to care for the wounded. A platoon of marines that had beaten a smaller group of Slashers and Buggers out of an abandoned city block when one of the huge Marauders fell from space. It slammed onto the ground with such a force that Eros had been knocked off her feet, even though she was nearly two and a half miles from the IZ (Impact Zone). She used her monocular and saw some of the fight. The Marauder began raising itself from the ground as hundreds of small black fliers launched from its hull. They quickly forced the platoon into a ware house, firing rapid pulse dark matter cannons, then began flying towards her position. Before they arrived she was able to see the Marauder prime its Sonic Emitter, causing its peculiar characteristic to happen in which all noise seemed to be sucked out of the air, then fired on the warehouse below. Eros was extremely nauseous when she saw the amount of clean methodical destruction that occurred. When the blast hit the warehouse it shattered it to millions of pieces, sending bits of cement and brick flying in every direction. But not only was the warehouse destroyed but the three blocks behind it as well.
She stopped daydreaming when there began a whirring noise. She instinctively rolled out of the way as a pillar of darkness punched into the blackened earth. The bugger had found her. It began drawing energy from its core and was about to fire when a loud gunshot reported. The bugger seemed confused for a moment as a pitch black liquid, thin as blood, began oozing from one of the holes in its side. One of its legs twitched as it fell over on its side writhing, in what might have been agony. Eros honed in on where the shot originated from and saw a marine holding a Sniper Rifle. He whooped loudly at his triumph. Even though her visor covered all but the mouth, she still winked at him.
Marines in their own slim forest green power armor came from every direction, a strike force. They slid down crumbling buildings on cords, one punched a manhole clean into the air and climbed out from beneath the street, and more came from alleys with guns at the ready. A marine, obviously a major from his darker armor, approached Eros.
“Where’s the rest of the platoon?”
She stared at the ground momentarily then said in a quavering voice,
“Wasted”
He was about to say something, when a loud rumbling was heard. Moments later an almost abyss black machine crashed clumsily through a building. It had no head, but instead merely a shallow hump where its single glowing crimson eye searched for possible enemies. When it came to rest on them the twenty-one foot tall machine let out an ear piercing roar that rattled Eros’ bones. It charged slowly at first, but each step it took, the gap between them closed rapidly.
“Marines take it down!”
As the Obliterator thundered towards them it stepped on a car, smashing one half under its pillar like feet while perfectly leaving the other half untouched. The marines fired into its almost depthless form while trying to find cover. The Sniper on the roof fired into its eye only to watch as the one-hundred and eighty mile per hour projectile simply ricocheted off and into the sky. The Obliterator twisted its left arm and charged its main weapon, the Gravity Cannon. It was a short and wide barrel that produced one of the most feared weapons the humans had ever seen. When the cannon drew energy from within the barrel it spun faster and faster as energy was quite literally poured into it. When it fired, the tremendous force caused the considerably heavy barrel to slide back in recoil. Eros had seen it herself in combat. It was powerful enough to send a tank flying fifty feet or more, and was deadly enough to cause a human to explode with such force, that in fact accounts existed that a marine had been shot with one of these deadly weapons and his leg had been found two miles away.
An unfortunate marine was crushed underneath one of the machines titanic feet with a loud crunch. Eros helplessly fired into its large mass with her M.A.G. Pistol. She then realized the bullets didn’t even touch it, let alone harm it. Smaller machines that slid up and down its length were taking the hits. The marines fired pointlessly as more of the small machines fell of the Obliterators chassis.
One landed near Eros and she looked down to inspect it. She immediately recognized it.
An Assimilator.
The dark black machine had six spindly legs on both sides that were jointed very close to one another. It had twelve red eyes placed seemingly at random across its face. Beneath its scarab like body was a small laser cutter used to repair the Obliterator it lived on or to tear into the thickest armor of the strongest tanks. Yet its most important feature was located on its back, where many sharp black crystals, the size of a mans finger, gave off a dark aura. These purposeless looking crystals were used to cause the fabric of reality to fold in on itself and teleport the machine anywhere within thirty feet, making them very agile.
The Obliterator fired at one building where it was being attacked from, then later at another. Gaping holes were created from the Gravity Cannons incredible power. Though no marines were killed in the ensuing explosions the level of destruction was appalling. The huge machine grabbed a marine before he could retreat into an ally and lifted him high in the air. The Obliterator jerked its arm down then stopped abruptly, the unfortunate marine could not withstand the pressure against him. His back snapped with a loud crack and then he went limp. The Obliterator tossed the body against a building as if it was nothing more than a limb torn from a tree. A man was screaming in agony as an Assimilator began tearing at his skull. Eros spun around and leveled her Pistol squarely at the hellish machine. She pulled the trigger just as the Assimilator was about to employ its laser. It rolled of the marines head and clattered to the ground, a neat hole punched directly through it. Eros looked at the marine as he regained composure.
“Thanks”, was all he could say as he searched for his helmet that had been torn off by the Assimilator.
“Your welcome”, she said sincerely.
“I want a missile team to take that thing down now!” the Major screamed as the Obliterator bent at the waist and revealed three long tubes. It must have picked up English somewhere because it spoke.
“TASTE FEAR!”
The Major took only a second to realize this wasn’t a gift.
“Hit the deck!”
Each tube sent a blue light spiraling out and into the street. One went completely off target and slammed into a building causing it to finally collapse. Another hit what remained of a tank, blowing it in half. And the last hit the Major square in the chest. Where he once stood nothing remained. Eros doubted they would find any piece of his body. The marine she had saved earlier had gone around the building and was now creeping up on the giant machine. She activated her monocular and zoomed in on him. His rifle was slung across his back and he held up his right hand. Held firmly within was a dark brown grenade that had its primer pushed down. He threw it up at the Obliterator and ducked behind a smoldering car. The grenade exploded on its back creating an eruption of Assimilators. It seemed very pissed off as it turned around and picked up the car the marine was hiding behind. It tossed it into a nearby building killing two unwary marines. It lowered its Gravity Cannon as it began to spin wildly. The marine defiantly fired directly into the barrel of the cannon, the inevitable calming him. Eros sprinted out in to the street and fired wildly into its back. It didn’t stop it, but it was enough for the machine to takes its attention off the marine and miss. It didn’t hit him head on , but it did send him flying through a window.
Eros continued to run in her power armor as the Obliterator leveled its cannon with her. However, instead of her attention being focused on the impending doom, she instead stared at a nearby rooftop where a pair of marines aimed a missile launcher at the back of the machines “skull”. There was a loud whoosh as two missiles screamed towards their target. They impacted on the back of the machines head. It twisted and fell heavily against a nearby building. It brought its right four fingered hand up and it came away slick with midnight blood. The machine roared in outrage and hastily fired at the perpetrators. They disappeared along with a sizable portion of the building.
Barely any marines were left save for the one she had saved and three others. One marine dropped a grenade from the building he was on directly onto the Obliterator. It exploded right in front of its eye. When the smoke cleared the machine was missing most of its eye that was now bleeding a dark red blood. It wailed in pain and slammed its massive body against the building. The unfortunate marine tumbled over the edge. He seemed doomed to die when the ground rushed to meet him but shot a grapple cord and swung back to the building. He thought he was safe but then turned his head and saw the bleeding eye of the Obliterator. He desperately tried to climb up to a window and was just about to make it when the machines fist smashed him into the wall. Its fist came away bloody with bits of rock.
Two other marines tried to shoot it in the eye and were promptly crushed underfoot. Eros was about to launch a disrupter from her wrist to give the chance for escape when a gauntleted hand pulled it back down. She struggled against the powerful grip and looked up. She saw the face of the man she had saved once again. He held up his finger to silence her and then pointed to the sky. She looked up and saw a crimson armored Shock Trooper soar from a nearby rooftop, its prototype jet thrusters belching black smoke, right onto the Obliterators broken head. It lifted its right hand and tried to swipe him off. The Shock Trooper held his balance and aimed his Rail Rifle directly into its head. The Shock Trooper fired on full automatic tearing the machines insides. After seven seconds of withering fire the Obliterator finally fell on its back with a thunderous smash, and the Shock Trooper nonchalantly jumped off.
