Description
Painted this with tea, coffee and red wine (plus black pencil). I thought it would be a fun experiment, I got the idea off someone on DA last year, but I don't know who that was anymore.Size: A4

Wow! I never thought of painting with such things, but it sounds like a lot of fun. You achieved some fantastic tones with them, love it! Β I might have to try this.... but those are three of my favorite drinks... I may drink them all before I put them on my paper ;D

I might have to! Β What kind of tea did you use?Β

Black tea, as concentrated as possible, which still ends up not very dark. I think something like green tea would be even paler though

Oh and how did you make those white spots in the background? Those really add up to the atmosphere of the painting :3

thanks! I used masking fluid for that. Masking fluid is a white latex-like fluid that you paint onto the unpainted paper whereever you dont' want paint to go. So I painted those spots with masking fluid, let it dry, and then painted the background with wine. Once the background dried, I was able to peel off the masking fluid (which is what you're meant to do with masking fluid), leaving me those white spaces Β I then painted borders around the white spots with tea to smooth the edges and give them a more glowing effect.Β

woww! thank you for your detailed reply, thank you very much! I would like to introduce higlights to my future watercolor works thus the interest, and I am thinking between white gel pen, white ink or masking fluid. Your reply really helped me a lot, and your works are a great inspiration

you're welcome!! Yeah I will use white gel pen and white acrylic for small white touch-ups, but when it comes to watercolours the white of the paper is definitely as "white" as you can get and looks better, so masking fluid is a good way to go Β I also use masking fluid to protect my foreground while I paint the background too - Β eg in this picture, I covered the edges of my fawn in masking fluid while I painted the background so you dont' have to be so careful about painting around it. Then when the background was done I peeled it off and worked on my fawn

if you're copying the pose exactly, a bit of credit might be nice. if it's a different pose, don't even bother with credit, I"m sure i'm not the only one that's ever drawn a deer with wings
