Description Hi there!

I'm currently working on different types of buildings for my CyGen Project:
Website: [link]
Demo I: [link]
Demo II: [link]
This is simply a demo to demonstrate a displacement mapping technique via mental ray, using the viewport depended subdivision controls. This will allow me to render very highresolution geometry close up to the camera, whereas further buildings will receive less amounts of details, due to the nature of it's tesselation algorithm.
I'm already very looking forward applying this technique on my next upcoming building types.

For the image itself. I've modelled the sculpture in Autodesk Mudbox (simply awesome program!!) within 2-3 hours. Generated a displacement map and rendered it with Mental Ray in Autodesk Maya 2008.

- 1 polygonface in the scene
- approx. 400000 polys during subdivision
- 4.5 hours rendertime on my old X2 4400+, with 2 GB RAM
- Maya 2008, Mudbox, Photoshop CS2

Thanks for watching,

Dan

love the face, and ripples. If that building existed in real life it would be the one of the best buildings created by man kind.

Autodesk Mudbox sucks. Try zBrush 3 , it's much better, he have more options , efect and type of brushes, no bugs and clear interface.
When you finish CyGen for Maya, can you rebuild it for Autodesk 3Dmax 8 ?

half you not run into any issues with memory limits using displacements in mental ray. I cant for the life of me get around that fact that using displacements and subsurface scattering on multiple objects keeps crashing every pc I work on. Seems like a setup like this would have the same issues

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

inetgrafx In reply to proggeh [2008-05-03 03:05:39 +0000 UTC]

Hello Steven!

Once in a while we run in "memory limits", but most of the time it's not really a problem.
Mental Ray handles displacement mapping pretty well, if the render- and approximation settings are set correctly.
Mental Ray loads and unloads displacement data at rendertime.
On 64bit systems with 16GB RAM / dual quads, I don't see a problem at all handling any kinds of setup like this.
In fact it wouldn't really require more RAM then if I'd use a highly subdivided geometry instead.
Thanks for your comment!

Dan

Hey Dan,

Thanks for the response. I definitely don't see a problem on a 64bit system... 16GB of RAM makes me jealous. My home PC is only dual core with 3 GB, which has a lot to do with the reasons anything over about a million poly's in Maya begins to show signs of crashing. I envy your study setup . The labs here are worse than my home PC, I couldn't imagine 16GB of RAM, that's amazing. Great work as always, your stuff is always top priority for me to check here on DA.
