Description
Don't remember when I did this, but I believe it was one of those spur-of-the-moment activities over at Penciljack.com wherein we redesigned iconic costumes. Click Download to check it out just a bit larger. The Batman is tricky, cause his design is already pretty close to iconically perfect. You can't lose the ears, you can't lose the cape. I think I ended up going a little too Masakazu Katsura (Zetman) with it, but what the hell.
I think one of the things I miss lately when I see Batman in cartoons or comics is the gadgets. I remember when the utility belt meant something, when villains were always taking it away, because otherwise he'd use that shit to bust out in about two panels flat.
So first thing off, I wanted to bring back an emphasis to the belt. I want to make the various bits on the belt unique, make 'em look like they serve purposes, no more uniform boxes or pill shapes. Batman, like Bond, always has the right tool for the job.
The cape I can't change much without changing up his iconic silhouette, which is too inherent in the Batman motif to mess with, but I shortened it up a touch and attached it to his elbows to keep it flaring so that we always emphasize the batwing shape.
The cowl I changed up a good bit, but then I realized I'm basically just riffing on Zetman, which is in itself a riff on the Batman, so we're going around in a circle. Nonetheless, I'd say the whole ears and such are actually part of a helmet that encases an elaborate sensor and processing network, which runs the wired parts of his suit while also keeping his head warm.
The boots are just reinforced and armored. The gloves I ditched the saw-toothed edges from, but I kept a flare and a point to help reinforce the old shape and play edges off the attached cape.
He gets to keep the shorts on the outside of the tights 'cause he wears a mighty Bat-Cup. You would too.
And finally the logo, which again you can't mess with too much when redesigning the costume, or you lose the iconography. SO I just spread it out a bit and let it run up the shoulders and down the abdomen. It's probably been done before.
So that's my initial shot at a Batman redesign. It changes a little, but not a lot, and I think that's important. The Batman's costume is already very simple, and as a result it's hard to step too far away without losing a sense of identity. It has to be a design of evolution, rather than revolution.
Drawn in CS2 on the Cintiq. Probably took about half an hour to an hour to doodle up and color.

Actually I like the Katsura's style on tour design, because is a huge fan of Batman
Zetman's One Shot is prety similar to tour Batman, and I'm fine with that, because those drawing look similar and awesome, but they are still not the same.
Good job!

This looks really good.
It doesn't look like something Bruce Wayne would wear, though. This costume resembles something closer to what Dick Grayson would wear when he took over the cowl.

I can see that. I wasn't giving a lot of thought to continuity in any case, it's more of an Elseworlds thing.

Thanks! It's held up well for me, too... years later, if I were busting out some kinda Elseworlds Batman I'd probably still use this.

Your welcome, I've been trying to create my own look for Batman to make him look more like a creature, I was thinking of giving him claws on his gloves for him to climb if needed to and his cape is longer something like the look from The Batman, not Batman TAS (just saying that so I won't confuse you) and his ears are a little shorter have him look a little goth but still have him look retro. I only drew the head of him but I'm still working on drawing his full figure and it's because of your work you've inspired me, thank you.

Absolutly love this dsign of The Batman, it sorta reminds be a bit of Batman Beyond but this version of him could be in like an alternate reality of Gotham City not in the future but in the non-distant future, I actually like the very first costume he had in the very first issue. For this one it has the same elements from the first costume but tweeked a bit, I also like what you've done with the cape an cowl it makes him look more creature like I mean he IS a creature of the night isn't he?,and he has to be able to strike fear on to criminals so it would make sense for him to have this look, but anyway love your version of The Batman.

It actually reminds me a bit of the catwoman redesign from The Batman series. Probably just the ears. Meh, I'm stupid, I know.

Very interesting take. Of course, with the recent/upcoming stories around old bats there's been a lot of these, but yours actually shows some serious thought instead of "what cool stealthy black geegaw can we add"
You're definitely in line with my thought on the old DC archetypes, there's just so much you can do to these designs before you lose their intent; Batman, a mysterious, resourceful detective aiming to strike fear into his prey, Superman, a bright, upstanding symbol of righteousness in primary colors, Flash (post mercury design) hyperactive hero, et all...
now if I was an ink artist instead of a wannabe writer O.o

Not much to say besides that I love what you did here, I think you really did an amazing job of designing a new bat costume, while staying within the 'rules' of the original design. Like you said, iconic, so cant really mess around too much. You managed to pull off something fresh and definitely different, but still recognizable.

Nope! I actually think Superman's design is pretty much untouchable within the same parameters I applied to the Batman here, and almost every variation possible within those limits has been done.
Like with Batman, there's certain stuff you can't touch without wrecking the iconic nature of the design. You can't take away the logo or the cape. Like Batman, the shorts and the boots serve a purpose in breaking up the color scheme and defining the limbs. And like Batman, Supes has a definitive color scheme of red and blue. All of the aspects are too inherent in his visual identity to remove, because without them he doesn't look like Superman.
But unlike Batman, Superman's costume is already incredibly basic. It's a simple logo, two color costume, boots/shorts/cape. With Bats I can meddle with the scalloping or the utility belt or the shape of the cowl, but with Superman there's hardly any details to edit. And to me, redesigns should evolve from existing details as much as possible. Adding anything new or taking away details entirely revolutionizes a design, rather than evolving it.
So what can you do that hasn't been done? You can mess with the colors, so long as you stay within blue and red. You can take the belt off or put it back, you can play with hem lengths and boot shapes and the length or cut of the cape, you can put the logo on the cape or take it off, you can mess about with the size of the chest logo but you can't remove it. You can mess with his hair (how long did he wear the Supermullet?), but it has to retain the curl and the color.
There's already a half-dozen variations to the costume along those lines that have come and gone over the years (my favorite is the Fleischer design, with the black diamond and the red S and the cape down to about knee-length, no logo), but the only ones that last are the ones that make the most minimum of adjustments, or which hearken back to elements from previous designs.
Superman IS the very icon of THE superhero. His design is pretty much locked in stone.

First impression of the bat symbol on the chest was, "wha?" But, then I remembered why he use to have the yellow symbol back in the day, and how that acted as a distraction/target to protect his head from getting shot.
The jury is still out on the ears of the cowl.
But this is friggin' cool. Nice job

If batman crossed over into Watchmen...this is surely what hed look like. You did an excellent job of creating a costume that is not only very old-fashioned, but also has a futuristic symmetry to it. Its the best of both worlds...very impressive design! ^^

The profile is fantastic, and the one real problem I have always had with batman is his head, according to the laws of batman, you always see both horns, you never see the top of his head (cause it's not a good angle to see batman)it is also hard to tell where the horns should start in a 3/4ths view. It feels universal across all batman designs... went on a tiny rant there.
I like your design, he feels very much like Zetman like you said. A little like a modern classical batman, if that makes sense.
