Description
Another of several illustrations created for Crafty Games upcoming tabletop RPG Fantasy Craft. Check out more of the art previewed so far at Crafty Games . Click "Download" at the left there for a slightly larger version.A halfling swashbuckler duels a goblin fighter on a shattered raft as it teeters over the edge of great cataract. Pitched in battle, their blades flash as doom looms near!
The setting (the types of characters, a broken raft at the edge of a rushing waterfall) was described for me, the designs are my own. I like swashbuckling characters, and the halfling's scale makes a common main-gauche and cutlass combo into a fairly decent short sword and saber, respectively. The goblin is armed with a spear-head turned wide-bladed knife and a sort of katar/buckler thing... makeshift weapons, deadly nonetheless.
I must be gaining some ground, 'cause even though I did this illustration earlier this year, I can see a few things I wish I'd done a little differently here. A couple of spot shadows missed, and I think I should have textured the water a bit. The goblin's balance is off as well. It's good to feel like I'm improving, but damn... I hate when I can pick apart my work.
I like a lot of what I did here, but I can do it even better than this.

I enjoy the dynamics nonetheless.
Here's to our continuous quest for improvement.

Just a little bit of advice, and it's not even that important. I know a lot about weapons, if not the art; and unless the halfling is left handed, the blades would actually be switched. It is to my understanding that the Main-Gauche was mainly a parrying weapon whereas the shortsword would be your more offensive, ergo your usual hand. But halflings are wierd anyway; so I wouldn't be suprised if he turned out to be left handed afterall. Wonderful pic ; btw, love the outfits. Can't wait to see it colored (If you color it that is.)

He's a lefty!
No, the truth is that when the image was originally composed, it was flipped along the horizontal axis. I often flip illustrations back and forth as I work on 'em, it's one of the perks of digital, and it helps to catch asymmetry and proportion and skew mistakes, among other things (when I worked in ink, I used to hold it up to a mirror periodically). Sometimes I forget which way it started, especially when it's not important to the subject, and it leaves little clues like that.
Don't much plan for coloring it... Crafty contracted for B&W interior art, and so this appears more or less as it will in print (albeit slightly larger, here).

Heh. Well, either way, it looks awesome. All your art on this series has kinda made me interested in it. Shame it won't be colored, but it looks great either way. :>

This is pretty outstanding. It's good you feel you've grown in that short a period, but man -- I couldn't find the balance thing no matter how long I stared.
Great work, Ben.

Naw, thanks! It's more one of those detail things that probably nobody but me could see anyhow. It's an mild OCD thing.

I see what you're talking about, but there's no way I would have noticed that without looking at this drawing for a long, long, long time, trying to find things wrong with it. It's great that YOU're doing that, that's your job. It was nice of you to tell us about it, too, so we can think about that sort of thing when we're doing our own action pieces. Thanks, and keep up the awesome work.
