Description Illustration for the Kenzer "Hackmaster" gamebook Spacehack. This image is ยฉ 2004 Kenzer & Co.

Combination of traditional and digital inks, this image was drawn at 8x10 for printing at 4x5, and yes, that is a small homage to my favorite fantasy author floating behind him.

I LOVE the old feel that this drawing gives...old, you ask? I can't explain it...but it makes me think of old "how-to" magic books one might find if magic really were...I love it!

This is beautiful, Ink. The detail alone makes it just incredible. I wish I had something to critique on (I love seeing that option checked) but I honestly don't see anything that needs it! I'd love to see this colored. It's just so much fun to look at.

ohi forgot how do u save a file with that resuliton .. without having a lot of weight??

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Inkthinker In reply to zaratus [2004-10-07 10:31:06 +0000 UTC]

By "weight", I assume you mean file size?

Well, if it's black and white, make sure it's a greyscale image... no point in holding information for RGB if you don't need it, and that can bring the file size down by as much as 50%. Other than that, I just save it a .jpeg through Photoshop. There's an image quality slider that can save you a bit of memory in exchange for a slightly shittier image, but unless I'm trying to come in under a certain size for some reason, I never bring the slider down below 8 (and rarely below 10, anymore).

And of course, smaller images have smaller file sizes... unless you're making a wallpaper, it's rare that you should need an image for the internet larger than 1000 pixels wide (and that's pretty big on most monitors... I think the average resolution for most folks by now is 1024x786, but many people, including myself, are set at 1280x1024).

In addition to .jpeg, I think a lot of people are using the .png file format, but I'm not familiar with its specifics. I think .pngs may be smaller, though.

BTW, the .jpeg format is only for web display.

For print, the preferred format is TIFF, a lossless compression type that make huge images into really small files for storage, espescially if you use the LZW compression. Photoshop can save as a .tiff, and the format is universally recognized.

But B&W image should always be in Greyscale, either way.

the background is very sweet. The window being there fills in the white around it perfectly...in that you know it's a room and stuff.
If that made sense?

v good

so when u print it must be the double size?? the drawing?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Inkthinker In reply to zaratus [2004-10-07 06:59:58 +0000 UTC]

It's always, ALWAYS best to draw at least 50% or larger than your final print.

Everything looks better when you shrink it a bit.

This is why comics are drawn at 10x15 but printed at about half that size. Illustrations are often done this way as well, and it's absolutely essential when you work digitally... print res is 300dpi but screen res is 72dpi, so what looks tight on screen often prints small, or poorly.

General rule of thumb: draw it twice as big as you plan to print it. Hard to go wrong that way, in my experience.

thanx a lot man this really helps didn knew.. and i always had that doubt . about the dpis iknew that but not the other stuff thanx really

Inkthinker In reply to zaratus [2004-10-07 07:15:18 +0000 UTC]

For that matter, concerning resolution:

Screen is 72dpi.
Print is 300dpi.
send files to the client for print at 400, so he can mess about with the size if he needs to.
I scan at 600, when working in ink. Convert that to a Bitmap using a 50-50 threshold, then back to Greyscale. This makes every line solid, pure digital black, and when you shrink it down to 400dpi any jaggies from the aliased Bitmap disappear.

Hey those are some helpful tips, maybe that's the reason why my hand inks look so smooth on paper but look like crap when I upload them on dA. Thanks for taking the time to provide this! I'm copying and pasting it into my folder of tutorials on my HD.

Very cool!! I like that you made the background mostly white empty space with only the black "window" to the star behind him. I like the foating objects and the detail in the crest on the book. I looked for something that could be improved upon, but couldn't find ANY. Nice work. gonna go check out you gallery now.
