Description
Rough animation which will be adapted to clean animation for the upcoming HTF series "Joe is Japanese". More on that later.
Look up "pen spinning" or "pen tricks" on Youtube and you can see where this comes from. I just watched a bunch of those and combined that with some logic and my limited ability to twiddle a pencil through my fingers and worked straight ahead frame to frame. Not bad for about 4-5 hours of scribbling, I guess, but nothing compared to the real deal.
No way to really key and tween 'cause I was never really sure where it would go next. It was a bitch and a half to make it loop...

I think the former is a lot easier than the latter.

both and exactly. T-T I've got two right hands when it comes to being cordinated enough to be able to pull off wither....and an inspiration in that matter is much too fleeting to be practical.

Hey cool...yeah...I tried that a couple times...hard. Looks neat though. As someone else pointed out I believe, the animation looks a little too smooth, which is hardly something to complain about, but with pen spinning, just looks like it should be more quick little flicks and stuff. Even shorter flashes of the pen moving. Neato.

I noticed that alot of your older animations were taken down or something. Whenever I click on them I always get a 404 error.

Some of them seem to come and go, espescially the Quicktimes. I might have been one of the earliest people to figure out you could upload Quicktimes, so it's likely that the older files were just lost during one of the DA server and version switches.
If you want to send me links to the ones that are down, I can try and see if I can reup the file, if it's not a stinker (and if it is, I ought to pull it anyhow

I feel like the timing is just a bit too even through the whole thing...I know thats always a tendancy with straight ahead animation, but still I feel like some of the motions could snap a touch more then others.

timing is really great, really smooth. Volumes are a little off but sure you can spot them in clean up

most of the Japanese guys I knew in college didn't spin pens like this.
this twirling around all the fingers is more of a "european magician" style.
the Japanese guys I knew spun pens in a simpler yet more difficult way.
they would start the move by holding the pen in a normal writing position.
Then, with their middle finger, they would push the pen around their thumb and catch it again in the first position.
This is a much harder than the spin you animated.
...but i still think your animation is incredible. keep up the great work.

this is great, I love your rough animations they look awesome! I looked at that school you mentioned a while back and they are a little too far away from me. So i'm going to try and get into AnimationMentor.com which looks like it's well worth it.
