Description
“’M tired mama,” Blossom whined out, plopping herself on her hind legs and sleepily rubbing at her eyes with her front paws. “Can’t we take a break? Please?” She liked running as much as the next rabbit but this was pushing it a little. The question had her mother glancing back at her, worrying her bottom lip between her teeth anxiously. “Well…”
She glanced back the way they had come, back to that dark and foreboding wood. Even the sight of it sent a shudder of fear down her spine. She turned to look at her daughter with a grim shake of her head. “No baby, we can’t stop. Not yet.”
Blossom’s ears drooped at that and she opened her mouth to complain again when her mother hopped over and silenced her with a lick to the forehead.
“I’ll carry you though baby. Okay?”
“Okay mama.”
With that said the mother dipped her head and scooped up her kit. With one last worried glanced behind them she turned and began bounding forward once again, despite every muscle in her body screaming for her to stop. Adrenaline and fear drove her on. She knew that if they stopped for even a moment they would be ripped apart.
After what felt like an eternity their saving grace came into sight. The bridge. All she had to do was cross that and then they’d be free of all their torments!
The mother slowed a little as she approached the bridge, her ears lying flat with fear. She slipped forward as quietly as she could, looking about every few seconds to ensure there was no one else around.
Then, with her heart pounding so hard against her chest she felt like it was going to break her ribs, she stepped onto the bridge. She cast a fearful glance at the sky now. If an owl were to pass by while they were crossing she knew she would be done for.
Blossom seemed to sense her mothers’ fear because the kit was dead silent in her mother’s grip, her ears pressed flat and her nose twitching with curiosity and alarm.
Once the mother had stepped onto the bridge it took a second for her to get her balance. The smooth wood beneath her paws wasn’t the sort of surface she was used too. As she hopped one step forward she felt her paws slipping beneath her and had to scramble with her claws to keep from falling flat on her face. After she’d found her footing she took a deep breath and tried again.
And so the pair continued on in that fashion, their progress unbearably slow until finally, at long last they’d crossed the threshold. They were finally free.
The mother let out a breath of relief, hopping over to a nearby patch of tall grass and placing her kit down gently. “We’ll be safe now baby. Mama promises.” As she said it she leaned down and began to lick at her daughters’ ears.
”We’ll be safe now.”
But when Blossom woke the next morning, she was alone…
