I loved the way they met, which I feel defines their relationship: always looking out for one another. But that bout with the Knuckelavee was just about one of my favorite moments in the series. It really brought these two full circle from how they met to the present day, and also did a lot to get Ren over his personal demons, both literal and figurative.

They seriously needed a backstory arc. All that was known was that they'd been orphans together for years on end.

We did see that. Beyond their first meeting there is no real reason to show their years together before Beacon. It's been established that they've always been there for each other, and beyond how they met, it's best to leave the past in the past.

Understandable. However, Rooster Teeth does have limits on the production budget and the stamina and time of their writing and animation staff. As much as I would enjoy snippets of our heroes' pasts, the only ones we'll likely see are those connected directly to the conflicts at hand.
