Incidentally, am I the only one who thought the show's character designs were a bit... lacking? And when I say "lacking" I mean lacking as in not being very distinguished, and by not very distinguished I mean recycled (yeah I'm dragging this out on purpose). Seriously, after a while I felt like I was seeing the exact same face on 3 or 4 different characters, just with different hair and bodies. Compare and contrast that with X-Men Evolution (which had the same writing/producing team and I think the same character designer) or even the 90s X-Men series, where everyone had their own distinct face. W&TXM? Not so much... of course there were a LOT of things W&TXM could have done better during it's thankfully short run.

There were a lot of things wrong with the show, starting with the fact that despite being run by Wolverine fanboys nobody really seemed invested in the story they were trying to tell. I think the poor characterization/failed character arc of Cyclops (played by a miscast Nolan North - great as Deadpool, not so great as Cyclops, or Superman for that matter) and the vilification of his relationship with Jean annoyed me most (sadly this seems to happen a lot) - along with the fact that everyone got punked by frigging ninjas just so Wolverine could rescue them (no wonder the future's doomed) but with the possible exception of Nightcrawler and some of the villains no one really came out of it looking good. Part of me wishes Cyclops simply hadn't been featured at all, or that he'd been the one missing/presumed dead while Jean moped over him (surprised Jean appeared on the show at all considering she'd been dead in the comics for a while by then).
They say that originally W&TXM was supposed to be a solo Wolverine show and I can't believe I'm saying this since I hate the character but it probably would have been better if they'd stuck with that idea. They could have made a perfectly fine FUGITIVE type series with Wolverine on the run from Weapon X during his pre-X-Men days, stopping every now & then to do a good deed, etc. At least that would've spared the other X-Men being dragged down just to make him look good.

The Ninja episode was pretty much what killed the series for me. It didn't make Logan look badass. It just just the rest of the X-Men look like losers (and how the f*ck did Emma not know they were in the mansion? And why didn't Xavier, who for no good reason whatsoever decided to only communicate with Wolverine and not someone infinitely better suited like Storm or Cyclops, warn Wolverine that this was going to happen? He seemed to tell him everything else? ) And remember Wolverine laying into Cyclops about letting personal vendettas come back to bite the rest of the team? Isn't that EXACTLY what the whole ninja thing was about?
And another thing... why did Wolverine wear a crash helmet while riding a motorcycle but Cyclops didn't? I can't begin to figure that one out. And when in the blue hell did Logan EVER learn to fly the f*cking blackbird? If Cyke wasn't going to be the leader, couldn't you at least let him fly the freaking plane?
One funny thing is W&TXM and the X-Men Anime both had a very similar scene - The one where Cyclops arrives to rejoin the X-Men just as they are about to leave on a mission. In W&TXM, he just quietly sits down in the plane. In X:A he arrives and it's like the star quarterback has arrived just in time for the big game. The Anime Cyclops is by far the best Cyclops ever (so to is everyone else.)

There's a recent insistence in Marvel cartoons to make the "coolest" guy the leader, which is actually a very bad idea. The coolest head, not the coolest guy, makes a better leader. "Cool" people will make popular decisions, even if those decisions are actually bad ideas. Cool Heads will make decisions that might just work. It's why stick-in-the-mud guys like Captain America, Cyclops, and Mr. Fantastic lead. Wolverine (who, ironically, ISN'T the coolest X-Man... Dazzler's a freaking rockstar) has proven to be a shitty leader in his attempt. Iron Man is failing as a leader on "Avengers Assemble" (and also leaving Cap nothing to do) and Iron Fist would actually make a better leader on Ultimate Spiderman than Spidey does. And can you imagine how much trouble the Fantastic Four would be in if Johnny Storm lead? As for "Hulk and the Agents of SMASH" the coolest person also happens to be the coolest head... but sadly, Shulkie won't get to lead.

I have noticed this tendency of Marvel animation to make the "coolest guy" the leader, though on Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes it had some actual comic justification - Iron Man has been leader of the Avengers before, if not always successfully. Wolverine being in charge had no real justification other than he had a solo movie coming out from Fox - and a terrible solo movie at that.
And yeah, the ninja episode pretty much killed what little credibility the series had, what little hadn't been killed by the head of Xavier's "You must lead them Logan..." spiel. Then "Breakdown" came along a few episodes later and further ruined the show's version of Cyclops by screwing with his back story (namely his First Class days) and just dumping on his relationship with Jean to make Emma look better... and then they killed Emma anyway, albeit with plans to bring her back in Jean's mind, which doesn't really work when we barely know who Jean is in this universe. I haven't finished the X-Men anime yet but it was infinitely better than W&TXM.
I actually forced myself to listen to some of the audio commentaries when I rented discs of this crap & while the writers spent most of it just making each other laugh as they patted themselves on the back the overall product feels like none of them were really all that invested in the show's story, hence we get no real reason as to why Wolverine just had to be the leader other than his fans are running the company & dopey episodes like Wolverine having G-rated fights with the Hulk and the aforementioned ninja episode. Seriously, if the X-Men can't handle a couple of stupid ninjas then they have business calling themselves superheroes.
Another thing that bugged me was the lack of camaraderie among the X-Men, no sense of family at all. No one cared that Colossus basically just sat the whole series out for no better reason than the writers in their own words "couldn't think up a good way to bring him back in" (and instead force us to sit through stupid ninja episodes), no one cared about Angel turning into Ark-Angel, no one cared that Jean was MIA that she could still be alive or lying dead somewhere, no one cared that Cyclops had gone crazy from the heat, etc.
All in all I'd say corporate shenanigans did us a favor getting this show cancelled, especially after seeing the leaked designs that would've put Cyclops & Jean in their 90s costumes, mostly because I would never want to see my favorite Cyclops costume tainted by such a terrible show (and the fact that the design leaked at all already kind of taints it) -
