I would like to know what happened to Azula... I've not read any of the comics.

In the new comics, Azula was still crazy, and then escaped.
Later, 'evil spirits' kidnapped children from their families, and after people protested Zuko's actions, Firelord Zuko took tougher measures against the threat. Then it was revealed that Azula (seemingly sane/no longer crazy) was behind the 'evil spirits'. She did it because she realized she wasn't destined to rule, Zuko was, and her job was to make her brother a better (tougher) ruler of the Fire Nation. She almost succeeded (Aang held Zuko back).
Personally, I'd prefer a more villainous Azula who wants to take over the world.
