Description
This is a massive panoramic I made from about 24 exposures. On Saturday I went on a little Bicycle trip to Durlach to see a castle, or at least the remains of one; the tower of the old castle is on top of a "mountain" called the Turmberg ("berg" means mountain in German incidentally). The old tower only take you so high but the modern tower built on top of the old one gives you a better view of the area.
The problem with taking pictures of vistas like this is that it's difficult to present to the viewer the scale and scope of the view itself. I try to capture this with my digital photos because we don't live in an age of stereoscopic 360 degree surround photography (yet).
The main problem when taking this was how to divide sky and land. It I meter on the sky the land is too dark and if I meter on the land the sky is to light. So I had to shoot both seperately so I could adjust the colours for both indivisually without neutralizing the image. This also allowed me to show more sky and land as a whole.
The Turmberg overlooks Durlach directly below, keep going straight and you'll hit Karlsruhe, go beyond that and you'll hit the Rhein and if you hang a left after that you'll hit France. To the left in this image you'll see the start of the Schwarzwald or the Black Forest. 31% of Germany is covered in woodland, which is one of the things I like most about this country. It's wonderful to have trees everywhere. The redish-brown rooftops of this part of Germany also remind me of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory which totally rules.
The image itself is scaled down to 25% for the purposes of posting.
Word to the wise: if you're going to live here spend more on a bike than I did. My hunkofjunk almost didn't make it home.

I'm in awe. I've tried some panorama a few times xbut my images always end up varying too greatly in tone and my stitching is always a bit off. To see such a great image formed on this scale is inspiring!
