Description

In Norse mythology, the Norns (nornir in Old Norse) are fateful female beings, some of whom are said to be descended from gods, others from dwarves or elves.

Three of these fated women are called by name: They are called Urd (fate), Verdandi (the becoming) and Skuld (guilt; that which will be). According to the Völuspá, the Norns dwell at the root of the world tree Yggdrasil at the Urd spring, the source of fate after which Urd is named. They guide the destinies of men and gods. The norns water the world tree daily and protect it from rotting. They also guard the Fenris wolf and determine the beginning of Ragnarok with their work.
