People never seem to believe me when I tell them that my big old tomcat Salem acts like a father figure / protector to newborn kittens…
Seriously, he’ll stand guard over a litter for hours until their mother returns refusing to leave from the spot to eat or anything! He’ll often even sleep either on top of the area, directly in front of it or within the opening of the area they are in depending on what sort of container the kittens are in.

He stands guard now while Eleanore (their mother) eats with my other cats just a few feet away from the box she recently moved the kittens into.
I often have to lay new food out just for him once everyone else is finished eating because of such.
