"This is all Elrice's fault!" the thought flashed through Cheshie's mind before he could stop it, then another thought, born of a guilty conscience and constant responsibility followed. "No, this is all my fault." A pang of guilt added to the black and white lirse's adrenaline as he raced after his younger sister.

True, Elrice had been the one to send him and his sister - Althaea or "Toasty" as he called her - out, in part to get the two of them out of her fur while she spruced up their nests again. On the other paw though there had been a real need to search for some grubs. The trio had been running low on fresh ingredients for their meals and Toasty's habit of midnight snacks hadn't been helping the matter. So really, everyone had had a part to play in today's expedition.

Elrice had even been specific about where to find safe berries, so Cheshie couldn't blame Elrice for that, and her instructions had even included sticking to the south side of the river to see what they could find. Had they followed those instructions? No, and now look where it had gotten them!

Cheshie and Althaea had looked for what seemed like an eternity on the south side of the river, following Elrice's directions at first, but every bush had been clean of all but the greenest of berries.Even the non veggy food seemed sparse, and Cheshie briefly felt like he was being watched, his feathers raising he had searched all about for the threat that could be scaring everything off but saw nothing.

Even Toasty, after grabbing the first berries they found had admitted the little green ones weren't worth eating, and Toasty thought most everything was worth eating.

That was why when Toasty had suggested they cross the river he should have known better, or at least they should have gone back to Elrice to see if the berries on this side of the river were safe to eat.

But no, swept up in Cheshie's excitement and his own desire to explore the new terrain he had agreed.
The exploration had started off well enough, both agreeing to stick near the river so as not to get lost, but still be able to spot anything the river and surrounding vegetation may have hidden from them on the south side.

As they walked along Cheshie noticed that Althaea kept looking into the distance, back towards the south side nervously, he craned his head to look as well but didn't see anything.
Just as he was about to stop her and ask what she kept looking at she rushed forward, bounding in a way Cheshie almost immediately recognized.

Toatsy had spotted food. Well it would be useless try to and get information out of her - at least until she had a snack anyway. He started to trot forward, scanning for what Althaea had spotted.

He spotted the bushes almost immediately. Wait.. were those berries a different color? Panic flooded his mind, and he sprinted after his sister.
