Description An illustration of the choice Sarah makes in the movie "Labyrinth".

(I think spend waaay too much time thinking about this movie )

The movie is about Sarah's journey from immaturity to maturity, irresponsibility to responsibility. Throughout the movie the fantasy world she is caught in tries to trap her- mirroring her real life, where her fantasy daydreams have consumed her and she's lost in her own little world of selfishness. She's presented with two options: two different Sarahs she can become. If she accepts what Jareth offers her, she accepts the "Masquerade sarah" and becomes truly lost in fantasy forever. Or she could choose to save her brother and take responsibility for her actions, becoming the heroine shown at the beginning of the film ("you have no power over me!!!")

A lot of fans of Labyrinth express disappointment that she rejected Jareth's offer and say she should have stayed with him and been his queen. yadda yadda yeah we all love david bowie.

But that would have ruined the entire movie. she made a mature choice and released herself from her slavery to her imagination and fantasy and her own selfish desires.

So.
That's what this is about.

Edit: Wow guys, thanks for all the favs in such a short period of time
I just want to add, I'm a firm supporter of the possibility of a future relationship between Sarah and Jareth. It wouldn't have made sense in the movie; she would have been choosing an adult romance before actually making the choice to become an adult; that's all backwards and wrong. But now that Jareth no longer has power over her... well, she can choose him freely, and I think that she would later on. I mean. Who wouldn't.

i love this so much and i totally agree with what you say, Sarah had to make the right decision first to save Toby and for her own person growth to become a REAL hero. beside thats what makes it so much more romantic she has found her own power and not having her own dreams used to control her. Jareth and Sarah are more on equal terms. xxx

This is completely awesome, and I'm in your camp about a FUTURE Sarah/Jareth relationship. Fifteen is far too young to say yes to that offer...

Nice picture. It is true that the Labyrinth was about Sarah growing up. There is a fan fiction that I read that Sarah helps Jareth in his time of need, and while doing so she thanks him for the life lesson that he taught her.

I LOVE THIS. I love the illustration: her expressions, the shadowing, but most of all I adore her hair. My favorite part of the whole damn thing, though, is definitely how well your analysis of the movie ties in with the work. It's been my favorite film since childhood and I've simply never thought of it that way. Quite frankly, you amaze me.

I have to say, I do agree with you. It gets really tiresome seeing all these fangirls rant about how stupid Sarah was for not choosing Jareth over Toby. But really, the whole point of the movie was that Sarah was becoming mature and realizing what was really important. I think she made the better choice in the end.

And I do think I'd rather have a mature Sarah exploring a real relationship with Jareth after the whole ordeal, as opposed to a childish Sarah just going with him because he's the man of her fantasies.

Hehe...yeah. I like to analyze the crap out of the stuff I watch, and Labyrinth is chock full of things to analyze. Of course, the behavior of said fangirls is also something I've pondered upon as a result...

str4yk1tt3n [2011-06-07 10:11:50 +0000 UTC]

Beautiful. And I totally agree with you. Though, in her situation, I would have been hard pressed to make the choice she did (not just for Bowie -- even just the 'give up annoying baby, get dreams' part of it...that's a sweet offer, from the perspective of a fed-up teen) and what makes the character so strong is that she DOES turn down superficial pleasure for responsibility. Wonderful work.

Ithelda In reply to str4yk1tt3n [2011-06-08 21:31:21 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Glad you agree. Yeah, it wasn't just Jareth she was turning down, it was a whole world of having your dreams fulfilled. (Though he did sort of symbolize everything he was offering to her all in one.) So it just shows you how courageous she really was

Alomoria [2011-06-07 04:46:57 +0000 UTC]

Awww...i think it's poetic how you explained this.^^ And i dun think you read way too much into it. That was pretty much the main plot of Sarah's character.
And i agree about the Sarah/Jareth thing. She was kinda too young to begin with, and needed to make the choice herself. But of course they should get together later on.......^^
As for the picture itself. It is amazing, like something in a classic story book.I loves it.

First of all - I LOVE this - such a great representation of it.

And, secondly, no, you're not reading too much into it! Terry Jones says that that was exactly his intention! You got it exactly right!

I love the concept, and your execution.

Thank you!

Lol, my family always accuses me of reading way too much into labyrinth. I mean, I may or may not have a notebook I've filled with analyses on the themes and characters in the movie *cough* so they're probably right

I'm glad you like it!

A lovely picture, your style works well with the idea
and I totally agree with you on Sarah making the correct choice. I especially like the
knowledge that she didn't have to give up her fantasies entirely as all the creatures
suddenly appear for the party in her bedroom at the end, lol, but she did still mature
throughout the film. Gives a nice thought to fans that no matter how old you get there
is always room for a little magic

Ithelda In reply to FangsAndNeedles [2011-06-08 21:34:31 +0000 UTC]

I liked that too; that being an adult didn't mean you can't dream or enjoy fantasy. It just means being responsible enough to put real life first. You can still enjoy the things you love.

Love this!! And you're not the only one who reads waaay too much into this movie...I shouldn't be allowed to talk about it sometimes, but it makes great comparisons for lit classes; I can't help myself (thankfully, the professor joined in on my Labyrinth tangent so I didn't feel too crazy)!

Maybe the fact that she left was one of the reasons the movie flopped in the box office initially...people didn't have time to let it sink in and were majorly disappointed by her rejection of Bowie

Ithelda In reply to LadyofFellan [2011-06-08 21:35:40 +0000 UTC]

Haha I'm glad I'm not alone! I just find so many fascinating themes and details in Labyrinth that most people I know don't see, lol!

Haha, that could true. The first time I watched it was I definitely a little disappointed.

Labyrinth is a treasure trove of themes and comparisons, etc! I lurve it. Might I suggest you read The King of Elfland's Daughter? It makes me think of Labyrinth, and I think someone else who enjoys analysing Labyrinth might enjoy reading it too

Love this! The way I see it is that she had to leave, she was needed in her world, and she needed him to leave her to grow up. I of course as many do believe after years pass he returns for her, and she as an adult decides to be his of her own free will.

I so agree! I usually shut my mouth when people are disappointed about how she reject him in the end but that offer he gave her was not a selfless one. It was a trap, nothing more, and I agree with her decision to reject him. But I'm also a fan of a future relationship between them :]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ithelda In reply to LadyWithoutAName [2011-06-08 21:38:01 +0000 UTC]

I know! Even though I think Jareth had learned to care for her by the end of the movie, he still was incapable of offering anything but a dream world tainted by his own selfishness.

Sooo.... after he gets past his selfishness, that'd be a great time for them to get back together
