Claudia's family had always been traditional. Even back when they had been one of the most influential Patrician families, they had fought on the Senate floor to maintain the old ways of the Roman Republic. In the era she had been born into, they fought against the Christianized new state of the Empire, still holding onto the worship of the old pantheon despite constant persecution.

When the barbarians had sacked the city, her family had been spared death or worse, escaping with many of their valuables thanks to the protection of gods who appreciated their still-loyal subjects. Other citizens, not quite so lucky, were quick to display their jealousy, and their anger at pagans spared the wrath of filthy invaders. Not long after the raiders left, the true barbarians came; a mob of angry citizens who slaughtered her parents and had their way with Claudia before casting her beaten body into the Tiber River.

In her desperation, she prayed to the gods for help, and she was answered by her longtime favorite deity. Mighty Neptune, ruler of the sea, granted her salvation as she drowned, transforming her body into something more suitable for the sea. Beauty robbed by the mobs abuse was returned to her, while her legs became a powerful tail colored in the traditional red and purple that had once symbolized Roman civilization. So moved was the god by her family's longtime loyalty that he even made a grand proclamation: until the old Rome rose once again, Claudia would forever live in her youthful state, so that the last woman to be a true Roman might be alive when her civilization returned.

Centuries passed, but the return she had hoped for never came. Men rose and fell in the world's greatest city, but none could make a true claim to be the rebirth of the ancient Republic or even the Empire that had succeeded it. In time, Claudia grew tired of waiting, and took some of her endless time to visit the world. She journeyed across the seas, visiting oceans no old Roman could have ever dreamed of. A few hundred years later she returned, but since then she has made constant trips around the Mediterranean, watching as life has moved on, great new empires arising in the ashes of what was once the Roman state.

At times she will just sit on a rock, looking out at a quiet city, or perhaps watching the mill of activity around one of the Pillars of Heracles - Gibraltar, as she has heard some of the modern seamen call it. It has been quite some time since she'd held any hope that a true countryman would bring about a new dawn for the old ways. Still, there's a bit of comfort that can be drawn from the world she now finds herself in - Claudia is well and truly the Last Roman, and with the immortality granted to her, Rome will live in forever, if only in the heart of a wandering soul.
