Description It took a while to get this thing right, but I guess I've finally managed. Of course, I'm aware of the big, glaring mistakes in this picture, but please bear with me. It was still a lot of fun to do, and I think I've learned a lot from completing this piece. (E.g.: Scarves flow when the wind blows... )

Lineart colored in GIMP.

'Harry In Winter' is the title of my favourite track on the Goblet of Fire CD by Patric Doyle.

(EDIT: ~AestheticDevil pointed it out that the scarf is too vivid and stands out from the whole pic, and I agree with her completely, so I tried to tone it down a bit. I'm not sure I've managed to do it right, but at this point, this is all I can do. )

Very nice likelyness of the real Harry! I especially like the shiny snowflakes that give the picture a mystical and magical look! Congratulations!

I really like this picture. I mean, it's Harry Potter! How couldn't I love it ? The snow looks very realisitc and I like how you managed to give the picture some movement with the wind. And the scarf fits very well I think.

Could you maybe tell me how you did the snow? I really would like to be able to draw such beautiful snow !

Thank you for the wonderful comment!

About the snow: I was mostly experimenting, so I didn't (and still don't) have a set way of doing it, but I'll try to recall what I did. I used several layers to put the snow on: some were in front of Harry, some behind him, there was one layer which contained the snowy ground he's standing on. Another (behind the previous one) had the snow blowing in front of the castle, and one had the mountain on it, plus one which contained the snow blowing behind the mountain. (Altogether, the pic was made up of 32 layers.)

Now I first created a white-ish surface with a grunge brush, and then with the same brush I smudged the snow using low opacity. I tried to smudge in the direction where I wanted the snow to be blown. I also put lots of small dots next to each other at some parts and smudged them too, again with a low opacity to preserve the dotted texture a bit.

The part where the snow hits Harry's cloak was done by actually working on the lineart layer: I first made that part of the lineart white, and then turned 'Lock Trasparency' off, and after that I just used the smudge tool very gently to smear the lineart a bit, creating a dusty effect.

The last layer on top of all the rest is that which contains lots of various sized dots using the 'Paint' tool because its edges are soft.

I hope I made some sense, but if you have any questions, just ask me.

Thank you very much, I'll try this out . Even in photomanipulation I have to draw sometimes. And I don't want to use a snow brush. So the next time when I include snow in a picture, I'll try it this way !

Great looking work!
The snow blowing about really makes it effectful. Especially the way you've worked it and the cloak together.

I don't care so much about the scarf not fluttering in the wind as much as it glows in the picture. I think it stands out a bit much in comparison to the cloak. Try mattening it off a little with white snow to amke it blend more but leave the face, that looks just fine.

Well done!

Thanks for the comment, I agree with you on the scarf issue. Remember the thing I said about solitary colors standing out more? Well, that's the case here too: orange is alone in this pic, and doesn't appear anywhere else, so that may be one reason why it stands out so much. Another reason is that it is indeed very harsh. I faded it a bit, and also made the lights of Hogwarts a bit more orangy so as to make the color present somewhere else in the pic. I'm not sure if it's okay now, but this is what I could do at the moment.

Thanks you for the good observation!

Looks much better now!

Though I'm not too sure about the up-tone of Hogwarts lights...but the scars looks a look better and amkes the pic feel more balanced when it's toned down like this.

Wow, this is cool! I love his face, and the snowy effects are really awesome!

At least we can draw snow, even if we did not have it this winter...
I am not very fond of this season, but a winter without snow is so sad. I wanted to sledge with my lil nephew...

Yeah, I don't like the cold and the ever-so-grey skies either, but I do love snow, and miss it very much. Or should I say 'missed it', 'cause now I think I'd be better off without it. Let spring finally rule!
