Jessica let out two sharp, pained grunts as Valerie’s wicked hooks bashed her cheeks, the second louder than the first. She was able to hold her position through the first one, but the impact of the second coerced her backward, ever closer to the ropes…which is exactly where Valerie wanted her. Realizing the predicament she would soon find herself in as the Ripper showed no sign of letting up, Jessica bit down on her lower lip for focus, and resolved to find a way to break Valerie’s rush.

Valerie approached menacingly, with her right fist cocked back and ready to continue the assault. She expected Jessica to cover up again, but instead The Nova Striker advanced with a look of fierce determination, right into the path of Valerie’s fist. Seeing this, Valerie couldn’t help but furrow her brow a little as she grew suspicious of what Jessica might have up her sleeve. Changing her gameplan on the fly, Valerie pulled her right arm back with a feint before it could fully extend, tucking her elbow to guard that side while at the same time wheeling her left around for another hook.

This brief moment was precisely what Jessica was banking on, because while Valerie may well have been faster, she was also painfully aware from firsthand experience of how much Jessica could pack into a single punch if she hit clean. The fact that Valerie stubbornly decided to still attack with her left played right into Jessica’s hands, as it meant that she would be required to leave her body open on that side momentarily. The extra lead time she earned by tricking Valerie into switching up gave her just enough time to sink her left glove into the smaller woman’s ribcage, thudding into the exact same spot she aimed for at the end of the first round.
