Description

Welcome to 2020 everybody, this decade is starting strongly with war memes, paint drying being entertaining, and people being roasted. It been a decade since I did the last journal, so let’s kick this rant off with a bang. A decade long rant. About Sonic. I promise to get to other things, but for now, Sonic. And SEGA, Sonic Team, Paramount, Sonic Twitter Account, what have you done. He used to be cool, give Mario a run for his money, and even be up there next to Mickey Mouse in popularity. Now fans are debating whether he’s supposed to be cute, seen as just another character, and even treated as a joke. So let’s get to the problems with this series one by one.

The lacking quality of storytelling, been said a lot already, since 2010 to now they decided to soften things. Lighthearted to the point of babies and meta to the point of working on external logic. All starting with Sonic Colors, I mentioned it before, the Wii version is standup comedy that goes on for so long they outright explain the joke. Even ruining any serious moments they may have such as when Sonic and Tails find what Eggman been doing to wisps. But right after that they joke around some more, or the moment after foiling his plan, everything falling apart and there’s Sonic doing standup before running off. Sonic’s character makes quips not long standup speeches. Generations is nothing but nostalgia and sole reason Classic Sonic is back in the limelight, it has no reason to exist, the story is non-existent. It’s just a glorified game engine for modders to play with because it’s too short. Was that mean, I’m not even close to done. Sonic Lost World, oh, but at least Sonic ain’t in control. It freaken’ flanderized him and Tails to the Nth degree, especially when he caused everything to happen from releasing the Deadly Six and almost indirectly killing the earth. He supposed to develop, hitting Tails into a trap after kicking a couch that released six maniacs sounds like development to me. Which leads me to the two-tailed brat, deciding to fight with Eggman because of ego instead of helping save the planet sounds right to me. The story’s tone is all over the place going from serious to joking around and back. And the Deadly Six, while some do have potential, their essentially: Leader, Psycho, Fatty, Emo, Girl, and Grandmaster. How is this a return to form when it flanderized the characters, has an inconsistent tone, and can’t give a good impression to the new characters. Now for the biggest offender of all this, Sonic Boom, the television show. It’s alright. When it wasn’t making fun of fans, making social commentary, and turning everyone into a boring Deadpool rip-off. And from 2014 to 2016 that was almost the only Sonic thing we had: Sonic Dash & Sonic Runners were mobile titles one of which getting a full-on Boom sequel and the other later including Sticks, Super Smash Bros 3DS/Wii U was a Nintendo game, and Sticks once again appeared in the Olympic Games 2016. Even tho Sticks was the only character I’ll be fine with moving to the main series without the fourth wall break. Oh, did I forget to mention around that time, the Twitter account was joking about the series itself with memes, it’s the internet it’s expected. But about the series you’re supposed to promote, pushing: Big the Cat as the Golden Child of Memes, Shadow as the Edgy Boi, and Sonic 06 is still bad reminders. And that leads me perfectly to the next problem.

Sonic 06, Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, the game that almost killed the franchise, the game to soil Sonic’s reputation, and the game that made SEGA complete & utter cowards. Allow me to abridge what happened: Yuji Naka left SEGA for his own ventures, development team was split to work on this and the Secret Rings, and had a strict deadline. I also heard from Matt McMuscles, his video will be at the end, the team was then shrunken even less for other reasons essentially the team behind the big anniversary title was small. Development story aside, this scared SEGA and all they kept hearing was: Sonic doesn’t work in 3D, Sonic games should focus on Sonic gameplay and leave his friends out, the strong story presence and world building doesn’t belong in a platformer, and SEGA should abandon the idea of releasing Sonic games every year and take their time. That list was from a Soah City article put into video form by Roger Van Der Weide, links will be at the end. And that’s why Sonic’s friends were no longer playable, why stories overtime became simplified, and why the Adventure gameplay disappeared. Last one is speculation. So everytime you bring up Sonic 06 this is what you’re saying, no friends, no story, no adventure, just simplified gameplay with simplified plot. And this has been pushed by fans, YouTubers, Critics, and Sonic Boom itself. When in all honestly, all they had to do was simply push the game back and polish the gameplay, that’s it. But no, instead of learning that lesson, it became their worst nightmare. They took all the wrong lessons, and ultimately, they took away Sonic’s core appeal. Despite fixing everything with Sonic Unleashed, critics bashed it, fans bashed it, and that led us to Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations, Sonic Lost World, and Sonic Boom. Despite not being made by SEGA, Sonic Boom was the aftermath, and because of that, that’s why I’m glad it died, it needed to die, to save Sonic. Which leads me to Paramount.

Update: so I was wrong about the movie, it was a better adaptation than I was led to believe, check out this journal to find out what changed, and my Twitter avatar colored like a clown, honk, honk, everything else aside from the movie section (except one thing) is still the same tho.

The Sonic the Hedgehog 2020 movie, brought to you by Paramount, and oh boy, do I have a bone to pick with you. You Lying Cowards. And just like how SEGA reacted to Sonic 06, Paramount reacted to the first trailer. And yes, I’m well aware of the complaints about the design, I was expecting it to change. But what I didn’t expect was them changing the entire tone and direction of the movie, no longer is it a straightforward fun action movie that’ll likely be on par with the Fast and the Furious, instead we’re getting a children’s movie. And this is what I mean: the cause of the EMP is changed from Sonic running down the highway to playing baseball by himself, Sonic saying “is that all you got” after destroying Eggman’s truck to “I have no idea”, as well as both Sonic’s and Eggman’s portrayal being more mature than now. Then Paramount thought it’ll be a good to present us with Baby Sonic, in a series meant to be cool and the anti-Mario. This little stunt even got Naka’s attention saying “I wanted Hollywood to make Sonic cool, but they show lots of cute sides and it’s a pity…” so even one of Sonic’s creator didn’t like it. And then the Sonic is cute argument conveniently started, while I ripped on Naka and the others before that was to avoid this. This is what I didn’t want the movie to end up like, now I ain’t even supporting the movie. I was presented with a fun action movie with a cool Sonic before being treated with a children movie with a childish Sonic. Even if it is a good video game movie, it ain’t my Sonic, mine is how he acted from Sonic Adventure to Sonic & the Black Knight, 1998 to 2009, not this childish trite. It may have some cool moments but will it be overwhelmed with jokes and cuteness from the likes of Colors to now. And that’s why I stick with what I said before, unless you actually care about the character, the series, acknowledge Sonic Adventure to Sonic & the Black Knight exists, and aware Sonic is meant to be cool with a strong story presence and world building, unless you seriously do, get out. All these childish requests from 06 complaints to this movie is killing Sonic, I don’t care if you want, A Good Video Game Movie, because they have a bad rap. If I can’t see my favorite hedgehog being what he’s meant to be, what’s the damn point, it ain’t Sonic, it just a character.

And those are the problems with the Sonic series, and part of it is SEGA’s fault. All they do was cower after messing up listening to those who hate the series or those with their own agenda bringing us here. Instead of pushing things back to polish the gameplay, they removed everything that made him Sonic. But it ain’t entirely their fault, it’s our fault as well. We could’ve kept him on track, but we didn’t, now this is what we get. And then we have the haters, the critics, and the outsiders. While the series aimed at expanding its world and including originality like Star Wars, they only got in the way, especially for the movie.  All they likely see is a Video Game Mascot from the 90s with four titles and that’s it. And like I said before, if you believe turning Sonic into Mario will help the franchise, get lost, leave, and stay out of our discussions. All we got from this mentality is Colors, Generations, Lost World, Boom, and Mania, good in their own right, will never be on par with what the original trilogy, CD, and Adventure to Black Knight. And yes, I re-reviewed Mania, and it still lost to Sonic 3 & Knuckles. And before I end my lovely rant, Iizuka, it’s time to burst your little bubble. Your two world thing is flawed and the Classic Dimension is a damn lie. Sonic Adventure had a kid flat out mention Little Planet and Angel Island during early localization proving yea false, along with other problems. And Generations was about time and space not dimensions making Mania an alternate timeline where he meets his older self, who is also destined to become Modern Sonic no matter how hard you try to hide it. A different one of course, but one non-the-less. And that’s my rant, my name is Sapphire, thanks for reading.

BONUS CORNER

This time on the Bonus Corners, links, and a short explanation on Mania, Sonic Forces, & Team Sonic Racing. Mania is a nostalgia fest and already gave it two proper reviews, that’s all I have to say. Sonic Forces, it’s that limbo game for me, its gameplay is decent but not on par with Generations, it has a story that’s better than Colors to Lost World but not on par with Adventure to Black Knight. It’s just a return to form. And Team Sonic Racing, I saw it as trying to reground Sonic’s world to a minor distraction because my attention was directed at the movie. It’s ultimately nothing but a racing game, the actual story mode is alright, the concept is weak but has potential, and the character interaction in story mode was decent not the best but decent. There’s really not much about it, if you want a Sonic racer with a better story you have Sonic Riders Zero Gravity and if you want one with better gameplay you have Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed.

Did you understand what the target audience was for the 2020 movie? It was a mostly kids movie because that’s what the movie was mainly targeting. And look, I can understand why Yuji Naka didn’t like the Baby Sonic parts, but don’t treat it like it's the majority. Baby Sonic only appeared for less than two minutes, and we never see him again. I’m sure there was at least one thing Naka liked about the movie. The rest of the movie was really fun for me. I know Sonic looks cute in the redesign, and I like it. And if you don’t like it, let me ask you this: would you rather have seen the movie with the old design?

I like the movie, and I don’t care what you say about it. Nothing you can say or rant about is going to make me change my mind about it.

I never had fun with Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, to be honest. I thought it was the worst racing game I have ever played... But that changed when I tried Sonic Free Riders.
