Description
A very quick painting that I did to use up some extra paint left over from another painting. Original was 5x7 on masonite with Genesis Artists Colors (an oil paint alternative) and was sold at the 2007 San Diego Comicon.NOTE: This is not a stock image. This is not a public domain image. Ooo, pretty-pretty!! I love the colors and the way you've got the stars sparkling.
Why masonite board? Is it a firm surface for working on? I see a certain amount of painting is done on it, but I have never tried it.
I just got some new watercolors and gouache (I think? Watercolors that are not transparent?) So I'm hoping to experiment over the weekend. Happiness is new art supplies, yes?

We love new art supplies!!!
I love masonite because of the ultra-smooth surfaces. I paint and then blend so that you really don't see the brush strokes, and masonite makes that really easy. With canvas, even when using the ultra-smooth and portrait canvas, I find myself battling the grain of the canvas. Which is what is happening with a painting right now that was too big for any of the masonite boards I had on hand. The downside is that there isn't the 'spring' or 'bounce' of a canvas, which is what Mother Hen really loves. I don't mind the firm surface of the boards so much. It also depends on what effect you are trying for.
At the moment I'm using Ampersand Gessobord and it's been working really really well. The limitation I have is that anything I use with the Genesis paints must be able to withstand 265 degrees F, so I can't use the cradled masonite board as they use glue to attach the cradle to the boards. I have a feeling that would cause a really nasty smell when heated up! So, uncradled 11x14 is the biggest I go with the masonite, as after that you can have a problem with warping of the board.
And yes, it's the gouache that is more opaque, and the watercolors are the transparent. Have lots of fun with the art supplies!
