Description I don't usually post the comics from my website here, but I felt the subject matter of this one in particular warranted a bigger audience.

For homework I want you all to familiarize yourself with these songs and the bands who played them:

Anarchy in the UK - Sex Pistols
I Wanna Be Sedated - Ramones
Holiday in Cambodia - Dead Kennedys
Six Pack - Black Flag
Should I Stay or Should I Go - The Clash
I Will Dare - The Replacements
Lake of Fire - Meat Puppets
Where is my Mind? - Pixies
Teen Age Riot - Sonic Youth
It's the End of the World as We Know It - REM
Infected - Bad Religion
Revolve - Melvins
Dirty Water - Dropkick Murphys

Spread the word! THERE IS HOPE!

I agree, but what about Green Day? or are you one of those people who think that they're not punk because they sold to a major record deal? and I've got a feeling that you also don't think that My Chemical Romance is punk either, do you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CaptainSelection In reply to Flame-Expression [2012-07-30 00:37:35 +0000 UTC]

Green Day used to be punk, but they sold out. My Chemical Romance is not punk in the slightest. If you like them, good for you, that's your opinion and you are entitled to have it, but MCR is not punk.

Flame-Expression In reply to CaptainSelection [2012-07-30 01:03:00 +0000 UTC]

i posted this a long time ago, and i now agree about MCR. and as for Green Day... i think Billie Joe will always have a little punk in him, although his music style may not be punk.

oh, so agree with this shit. (I'm not going to mention the wankers who diss The Sex Pistols, etc as too much regular punk to be real punk --whoops, looks like I just did. shut up your face, it had to be done.)

Before you speak arrogantly about other people's knowledge of punk, try re-educating yourself. A lot of the bands you listed aren't even really punk. Certainly not REM or Pixies. Sonic Youth had the punk ethics but they are much different in theme and sound. I'm not saying they are bad, they just aren't close to punk compared to the bands you could have picked. Sex Pistols, Ramones, and The Clash were just as mainstream and pop as FOB and Panic at the Disco if not more. And the Sex Pistols are just as manufactured. You picked the most pop song of all for The Clash when they have much better and more punk-related ones. Even White Man in Hammersmith is more punk than Should I Stay or Should I Go.

You should watch the Decline of Western Civilization. And your playlist should include The Minutemen, Gun Club, Danzig's Misfits, Iggy and the Stooges, Minor Threat, The Screamers, Siouxsie and the Banshees, X, and Germs if you want a much deeper and eye-opening introduction to punk. I'm not just listing these to say I know more bands than anyone else, I am listing them because they are all essential pioneers and very important to understanding the movement's history and ideas. Most of them are way better than

GBH, DOA, Dead Milkmen, Saccharine Trust, Rudimentary Peni, FEAR, and the Pogues are also important but I wouldn't say essential.

I am not trying to ridicule you or show you up. I am just trying to "spread the word" as you say and educate people. I love punk and I also desire for it to be accurately represented and appreciated. I don't feel your list accurately represents punk.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. Green Day is my favorite band, and though they are different than the original punk bands such as the Ramones, they ARE punk. Have you heard all of their music, or just the songs from 21st Century Breakdown? Go back to songs like Reject, No Pride, Fashion Victim, and even St.Jimmy, and you'll see that they are indeed punk. or you can call me an idiot and disagree, i dont really care if you agree or not, im just stating my opinion.

Like the list, but I would choose another song with The Clash than "Should I Stay or Should I Go". It's a good song, but far from their best. I would recommend London Calling or I'm so Bored with the U.S.A.

Does people like that really excist? People who think emo's are punk?

seeing as there's a whole new generation coming who doesn't even know who The Clash is? yes! young kids nowadays don't have Rites of Spring like our punk predecessors did. now it's all My Chemical Romance.

how can you say Green Day is not punk? Do you even really know anything about them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cybervixation In reply to Flame-Expression [2012-03-14 04:12:31 +0000 UTC]

i know that punk has become a stereotype and a style, do you know anything about the culture? what it means to label something as punk? listen to crass, listen to subhumans, listen to choking victim or the exploited, shit, listen to the dead kennedy's!
listen to real fucking punk fromm back in the day when punks weren't classified by their colored mohawks and spiked jackets, but for what they stood for!
i dont need to know shit about green day, i dont even hate their music, but their fans misconstrue whatever it is they are saying, nobody understands the true meaning that a band wanted to put out. either way, their style and music sounds like shit, period, and its not punk just because they strum a guitar the same fucking way and flip people off in their videos, OOOH SOO COOOL. PLEASE, its just as bad as the sex pistols, yeah anarchy in the UK, ohhh so hardcore and punk, they dont give a fuck!
HA. fucking stupid. pathetic.
when the fuck did i even write this? why are you replying to something i wrote a fuck ton of time ago? i really dont give a shit, hon, i really dont care about this

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Flame-Expression In reply to Cybervixation [2012-03-14 21:35:17 +0000 UTC]

im dont wanna get into some big argument, but punk music is not caring what anyone else thinks, rebelling, doing what you want and being the wild, singled out one. thats what Green Day songs are about. u can have ur opinions, but ill have mine.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cybervixation In reply to Flame-Expression [2012-03-15 00:24:59 +0000 UTC]

wow, you dont know shit.
you dont know what real punk is if thats what you think.
look up crass, yes sir, i will, read the lyrics, they are long, like a never ending poem, it has strong meaning.
now thats real fucking punk, real problems, real "rebellion"
you fool, i hope you dont call yourself an "anarchist" as well.
its not just fuck the government, but about humanity.
some people cant even understand themselves, much less understand the dream of many other people, their dreams grew distorted into a fashion and a statement, a statement of what?
that you have individuality? no one gives a shit.
go listen to some real fucking punk, this aint my opinion, this is the truth, you dont know the truth about what punk was supposed to be, not what the media made it to be.
fucking posers...
thats why i stopped dressing like a grungy punk girl, i decided following a certain style was fucking stupid, i am my own self and i dont need to classify myself as anything to fucking love myself, i have strong beliefs in what i believe is the true reality, people can easily reinvent a truth to their liking, dont be so gullible and do your homework, ok?

Flame-Expression In reply to Cybervixation [2012-03-15 01:06:59 +0000 UTC]

wow, now your calling me dumb? think what you want, i dont really care what you say, Green Day is punk and always will be

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cybervixation In reply to Flame-Expression [2012-03-15 02:22:10 +0000 UTC]

im not calling you dumb, im saying you are ignorant in this subject, there is a difference between a person being completely dense and a person not knowing what the fuck they are talking about, yet they still dare argue with someone that does.
and i really dont care what you say either, i know what i know and i know you dont know what your talking about, but thats ok, because i disagree with most anyone anyway.
you think what you like, but just remember this conversation every time you dare shit on the word 'punk'.
why dont you go out on the streets and meet some real punks, huh? some real gutter punks, ask them what kind of music they like, i wonder how many of them will reply with bands such as "green day".
punk is dead anyway, it died as soon as it became a genre, a fashion, a way for angsty teenagers to follow a trend that "relates" to them.
fucking posers!
real punks arent even those punk kids that think they are sooo badass and get fucked up on all kinds of drugs and drink their faces off and then they destroy shit and punch each other and pass out in their own puke and piss, being punk isn't about being rebellious or grungy, fuck, theres no words to describe what is punk, but it sure as hell isn't what you think it is.
you need to live the lifestyle personally to even remotely understand, i've been there and done that, i was a fucking poser too, but i also understood what i was pretending to be.
show some fucking respect, and dont ever call green day punk, they aren't even from the time that punk was at its peak!
no, they showed up and made the poor genre into their system for mass production. fucking disgusting fascist pieces of shit, i'd rather listen to skin head/hillbilly music than green day!

Flame-Expression In reply to Cybervixation [2012-03-15 20:09:12 +0000 UTC]

i dont care.
you dared to challenge some random comment i made in 2007 and now your getting all defensive because i actually know what the fuck im talking about and you have nothing better to say but that, silence will be a more powerful voice in this situation.
have fun with your ignorance.

Ahahaha, fond memories of seeing DKM live... once. But it was awesome.

Back when I was going through my major punk phase I LOVED Bad Religion, DKM, Melvins, Flogging Molly (hush, they count), Nekromantix, Mustard Plug, The Nerve Agents, Leftover Crack... Tiger Army... Glassjaw in the good ol' days... Ahh, fond memories. Now I'm more into industrial/synth/futurepop, but the CDs remain. *happy tear!* And yet it seems like poseurism has only grown. Of course, I'm sure by many standards I'm a poseur, too, but at some point it gets silly...

I guess what I'm trying to say is, there's a line between making fun of bad taste and music snobbery. XD P!atD and Fallout Boy and AFI and Linkin Park... and... *shudder* Miss Lavigne.... Yeah, those just go under bad taste. XD Alas.

Go, music re-education! Change the world! We shall cheer you on from the moshpit!
