Description Promised tutorial about realization of "Autumn" painting. This was so far the most time consuming tutorial to write, I really hope it helps. Enjoy (:
I gifted the original painting to my dear friend `SRaffa

Please note that this might not be the most perfect or proper way of how to approach watercolor painting, it is merely an explanation how I worked.

Wow I honestly cannot thank you enough for this watercolor tutorial! It's very well done! I've been sketching portraits my whole life but have only just gotten into using watercolor and I'm in love but I feel I need a few tips! I have been wanting to paint for like a year now and struggled to find real inspiration.. This tutorial along with all of your other amazing work has seriously inspired me big time. Thank you so much! <3

I love your work, so this is awesome. What or how do you usually mount your finished work? Framed? Leave it natural?

jane-beata In reply to roren001 [2013-10-18 07:51:59 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. Usually I frame my work behind glass for exhibitions but if I'm selling it abroad, I leave it natural due to transport, the buyer than frames it himself.

Hi..thank you for the tutorial..i paint as a hobby and am a big fan of your artwork I tried painting a portrait of my friend using the technique in your timebomb speed portrait video..i find it difficult toget the diffused texture for the background...and also i find that the paper absorbs the color too quickly...how do i correct these?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jane-beata In reply to Gsekaria [2013-08-11 07:57:11 +0000 UTC]

With textures it's tricky, you can never get it exactly as you wish, there is a huge "accident factor" there - but once you spend certain time playing with watercolor washes, you will be able to control the final look up to a great extent. It's the amount of water you use and how you soften the edge of each wash that effects how it dries and how the pigment is distributed in the end.

As for paper absorbing color quickly, I'm not sure if you use the right kind. Some papers are more thirsty than others, my portrait was done on a very smooth and relative thin paper (230g) that requires only a thin wash to create quite a nicely looking transparent texture.

Another great tutorial! I am curious how you keep your paint from running out of your designated lines in your sketch? Is it just from practice or is there some trick to it? This is where I seem to have the biggest problem with watercolor.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

jane-beata In reply to Astralseed [2012-10-24 08:54:19 +0000 UTC]

I remember paint used to run away from my lines when I was starting, due to inappropriate brush and the use of school watercolors (they contain very little pigment, needed a lot of water and were drying for ages). Natural hair brush holds just enough water not to make your painting a river but you need to use the right size - mostly I'm using no.4 and 2 for smaller paintings. I find it easier to control a small brush than a pencil or pen, you don't need to use pressure. Of course it also takes practice, but I clearly remember grabbing much more control over watercolor the moment I bought good brushes.

Astralseed In reply to jane-beata [2012-10-24 17:02:07 +0000 UTC]

Ahh that could have very well been my problem then. I used to use very cheap brushes back in the day. These days I have some which are fairly good quality so I'll need to have a try with those and see how it goes.. perhaps I will take a liking to watercolors if I am able to use them correctly! I really appreciate your help with this!

jane-beata In reply to Astralseed [2012-10-24 17:26:34 +0000 UTC]

Any time, really (: I was thinking of it today, and it's true that your brush is your best friend and a magic wand, no matter what paints you use, brush is always your most personal tool.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Astralseed In reply to jane-beata [2012-10-24 17:30:19 +0000 UTC]

I've always been quite poor so I usually make due with cheap stuff but a few years back I had the opportunity to invest in some good brushes and some quality acrylic paints and I LOVED the difference it made, though I still can't afford enough good supplies on my own right now. Someday!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jane-beata In reply to Astralseed [2012-10-24 17:34:42 +0000 UTC]

Gosh that's the biggest problem of traditional artists, supplies cost so much, and if you live somewhere far from bigger city, you need to order online and pay shipping. Sable watercolor brushes are insanely expensive, but the good thing is it depends on their size. Buying a small brush and working on small paper allows to learn watercolor without wasting too much money (: (My lucky no.4 Tobolsky-Kolinsky Maestro brush cost me about 15 $, bigger sizes I still use combined sable/synthetic brushes)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Astralseed In reply to jane-beata [2012-10-24 17:56:10 +0000 UTC]

Indeed! I am loaded down with colored pencils and acrylic paints and pastels of various sorts (though I only like oil pastels) and I have airbrush supplies at my disposal as well but using the airbrush with a little one running around is always difficult so I've not done that in nearly 3 years.. but yeah.. traditional art can be very expensive

jane-beata In reply to Astralseed [2012-10-24 18:16:37 +0000 UTC]

Yet, would you give up on it, I rather work twice as much to invest back into equipment. I have a thing for art supplies, the day I get to go downtown to buy new ones (about once per 2 months) is like a Holy day for me, I dress up for it and everything..You wouldn't see me buying fashion or shoes but oh the money I am able to give out for watercolor, ink, brushes and paper!
