I think Edgar Rice Burroughs had Native Americans in mind when describing the "Red" Martians.

I just headcanon that Martian eggs have some equivalent to an umbilical cord that attaches to the interior of the egg for nutrients. And I've yet to see someone make the argument for Dejah Thoris to not have her fine pair of breasts in artwork.

On the other hand, I'm too much a coward to have the men's ding-a-lings dangling about, so.
