Description This is a concept for when I worked on Firefall at Red 5 Studios. This was an ideation done on a blockout. (a buncha basic blocks put together to imitate the playspace). I went in and concepted out what it may look like once we artified it,so we could figure out what assets we would need to make for the area.
   In this case it was The Rig, an aptly named oil rig turned to storage area for one of the game's companies. Meant to be a PVP location/stage I worked with some talented friends of mine Mike Altuna, David Kang and Steven Rich (all at Blizzard now, I believe). So I quickly painted out the look and feel for the area and this is one of the initial images we used. Main idea was to use some cool and warm neutrals and then have colour pops help define edges and items of importance. (Thus railings being yellow, upper platforms orange, etc). This was to not just make it look cool but also allow for different areas to have colour definition and unique items so you could tell where you were at a glance. It's messy because we were trying to save refined concepts for more exact items and save time since we had a very short amount of time allotted to each area. All very basic, but I am typing it out for any uninitiated.
    In the end it actually hit pretty close to concept, though timeline and limited resources forced us to cut a lot, such as the towers at the top which weren't important so we could have more for the interior.

I get the impression with a lot of your pictures - including this one - that you've got a good eye for perspective.
Out of curiosity - what helped you to get the hang of it?  Just a lot of practice? Or are there specific things to keep in mind when accounting for pushing the angles and still making the proportions feel right?

Or - have you simply been very good at maintaining good shape proportions at whatever angle is called for on a particular subject?

I'll be honest- I did it all by eye and feel long before I ever learned proper perspective. However these days unless I am using a fisheye perspective or some such I like to draw out guidelines on my sketch to keep things in the general size and perspective that they should be.
   In the end, I always go to the most boring answer - practice.

Although I do find that learning new techniques IS helpful,
developing the mental and physical "muscle memory"
through actual practice helps most.

Learn some - draw lots.

So this was used in those extremely early stage PvP times?  i only joined in late alpha stages in 2011, 2012 or so.  only got in.. one, two matches of PvP at the time.

I don't know how much the released alpha had the Rig in it. There were times when pvp was in and then times it was pulled. It existed, in about 3 different incarnations, at some given time...haha

It had a troubled development, it wasn't just the chinese acquisition that was the cause of its downfall.

yes but the shinese company was the last nail in its coffin. i was very confused when coming back to the game after a few years and seeing it extremely cut down and simplified. it was sad really.

Great looking platform. Even when things don't work out for a project, there's always this cool leftover art that comes out of it. You're great at everything you take on. This rig is bursting with a lot of personality to it.

Our old art director from the project moved on to Overwatch afterwards. A lot of the firefall style got injected into Overwatch, which was made afterwards.

Awesome work. I've had my small share of trying to draw buildings in perspective and it's not a simple task. It always takes forever and amounts to nearly nothing.


Firefall was nice during the closed beta but I've lost interest quite fast after that. Apparently, so did everyone else.

It gets easier with time but I think the curve is very steep for it at first. It was with me, anyhow. I can not do 5 images of that type in the time it used to take me to do a single one of less quality, haha.

   Firefall had a verey rough development for a lot of reasons and the resulting game reflected that heavily, sad to say.

Well, seeing as one of the ex art leads on Firefall went off to make Overwatch, and one of my buddies who I made the rig with is working on Overwatch, it is possible! Rig came way before, though.
