Description
This fellow showed up in our backyard. They really are flying jewerly, with those turquoise blue and jade green highlights.I thought it was a pretty big dragonfly, to show up in a small inner city back yard.

What kind of lens did you use for this if I may ask?

I think, I was using a Nikon Coolpix 995 at that time, I assume I zoomed in to the max 152mm and got as close as I could.

I'm very fond of dragonflies. My dream is to photograph one one day. That day has yet to come sadly... Beautiful shot.

Early in the morning is the best time for it, when they are still a bit sleepy, or rather cold and sluggish from the night. Luck!

omg thats an incredible picture! I wish I could find dragonflies like that. the only ones i seem to find here are the brown/blue back ones that all have black eyes!

We see these more often, but they seldom sit still. The smaller damsel fly are even harder to catch...

most dragon flies will return to the same spot after being disturbed
u need to catch insects in the mornings tho as they rely on the heat to get their metabolic rates up
so they can't move as fast

I like that thought, flying jewelry, that's a perfect description of these mystic creatures. Great shot.

...wow... Funny how some people travel the world looking for the perfect shot, and some just open the back door. This is amazing...

Just goes to show, you need to:
a) always have your eyes open
b) always have your camera near
Glad you like it.

Yup, Murphy has it in for me too...EVERY time I forget, I miss the op of a lifetime. I finally bought a photo messenger bag, just so I could keep it with me more easily...

It's harder with SLR's. My little Coolpix is about the size of a hefty paperback novel, which makes it easier to carry around. On the other hand, I sometimes feel mildly silly when carrying it around everywhere

As did I, in a normal camera bag... I finally found one that4 lookedl ike a regular messenger bag, but had all the padding and protection of a camera bag...I don't feel like such a anymore
