Appearance: Makay has a generally toned build, and slightly above average musculature. He has built up lean muscle instead of thick, fatty muscle. his stamina and strength is near average, but his energy levels are higher. He has a square jaw and more prominent cheekbones. Makay's eyes are light brown/hazel brown, and gentle in appearance. His eyebrows are thick and dark, much like his hair. His hair is jet-black and straight, while his skin tone is mid-range. His hair is parted on the right side and he has short bangs. His nose is round and his lips are thin.

Makay's typical clothes include a light blue long-sleeve shirt, dark tan pants with a belt, and a dark leather vest with pockets. He wears dark boots in warmer weather, and hide/fur boots in the cold. His other outerwear includes tan gloves and a capote-style brown coat with black stripes. The coat has a hood attached, and ties around the waist. He wears a loon woodcarving as a necklace at all times. The carving is hung on a leather strap and usually tucked beneath his shirt. His weaponry includes a hunting knife with a whitetail antler handle, carved by Makay to resemble an Amarcturos. He carries a 7' ashwood spear, with a long metal spearhead, attached by riveting. He ties the leather/treated hides of important or special kills to the shaft just behind the spearhead. He is very skilled with this spear.

He usually carries himself in a relaxed manner, and usually comes across as friendly and non-threatening to strangers. Some make the mistake of underestimating him because of this. He's very capable of defending himself if need be.

Personality:

Extroverted/Friendly: At his core, Makay is a very amicable person. He makes an effort not to create enemies or ill-will. He will always greet a stranger warmly. Makay likes being around others, and doesn't mind being in groups so much. He likes meeting new people and making friends. He very rarely holds a grudge, and is quick to forgive.

Emotional/Expressive: Makay is not the silent type. He isn't afraid to express himself or his feelings. If he's hurt, he makes it known; he won't hesitate to pull someone aside and explain the situation. He likes to talk with others. Makay is easier to upset than some, because of his emotional nature. He will be much more deeply hurt by friends than others would be in the same situation. He's desperate to please others, a trait he developed during his mother's depression. Because of this, disapproval can damage him more than usual. Things that upset him will also continue to plague his mind longer than they sometimes should. He has a tendency for excessive worry, but he doesn't see it this way. On the flip side, he's also easy to please, and takes joy in little things. When he's happy, it's difficult for others not to be. Sadly, a persistently unhappy person will bring Makay down as well. Makay always lets loved ones know how much he cares, for fear that he may not see them again. He becomes very attached to people, and harbors a nasty fear of abandonment. The meaning and purpose of his life, as he sees it, comes from being with and making other people happy.

Supportive/Kind: Makay takes great pleasure in helping others. He's very altruistic and generous, doing his best to keep spirits up. He's attracted to people he believes he can help, and takes great satisfaction in knowing he's made a difference. He's easy to grow close to, but gets disheartened when he thinks someone doesn't appreciate him. He's very kind to all people, even those he knows nothing about. His kindness is one of the first things people notice about him. He grows cold only when insulted or attacked, and even then will only defend himself. He very rarely throws the first punch. He will, however, defend others vehemently, especially his friends. Others often seek Makay out for reassurance and counsel.

Intelligent/Serious when required: Though he can come off as naive, Makay is actually pretty wise, especially for his age. He's no fool, and can become very serious when the situation requires; he just prefers to be relaxed and carefree. Makay may have a near-childish love for fun and friends, but anyone close to him knows how perceptive and calculating he actually can be. His life experiences are those of a weathered, aged man, and they contribute to his overall wisdom/intelligence. His life has not been easy or full of happiness- he makes the choice to be happy whenever he can manage it. Makay could have easily been a very different person, and owes some of his good-nature to the presence of his best friend, Kavia, throughout these hard times.

Active/Fun-loving: Makay loves to smile, and to laugh. Any chance at fun or enjoyment is particularly enticing to this young man. He loves to mess with his friends, especially Kavia. Outdoor activities like swimming and climbing trees are some of his favorites. He loves to be active, but enjoys relaxation just as much. For Makay, the best day is one where he can have fun exploring and being active with friends, and later retire to a quiet place with them to chat and relax. He's a joy to have at gatherings, or even  just as company.

Beliefs: Makay is Pantheistic/Naturalistic. He doesn't believe in spirits or deities, but holds the earth and its inhabitants as sacred. He has great respect for nature, and kills only with purpose. He's a very logical and rational being, and understands that nature should not be worked against, for the benefit of all. He dislikes killing others, even in defense. He has great respect for animals. As a huntsman, he is very knowledgeable about wildlife, and loves animals. Makay views each death as necessary for life, and is grateful to each animal he kills for providing him and others with food and clothing. He takes pleasure in the competition of the hunt, not the killing itself; he just accepts it as necessary.

He's prejudiced against Virspera, but has never experienced a "friendly" one. His personality makes him more easily persuaded to accept them one day, though. He has extreme disdain for those who kill for sport or without remorse.

Background: Makay was ousted from his home at age 6 by a Virspera attack. His father was murdered by a Virspera while trying to save his family, but this was not witnessed by Makay. He remembers very little about his father. His mother took him and his older brother into the wilderness, hoping to escape. After wandering for a few weeks, they were discovered by scouts from Pikatti, and taken to the small village, where he met Kavia. After his father's death, Makay's older brother became distant, and hateful. He was consumed with the desire for revenge. Three years later, his brother went off on his own, chasing a group of Virspera that were rumored to be in the area. He suck away at night, despite being urged to stay, and never returned. The Virspera weren't close enough to pose a real threat, and never found the village. He's presumed dead.  By this time, Kavia and Makay were good friends, and Kavia helped him through the grief. She became more of a sister figure to Makay after the incident.

Makay's mother was an excellent woodcarver, and taught him to carve. She fell into serious depression after his brother's disappearance, but never became cold toward her remaining son. They stayed close, but she almost never left the house. Makay became desperate to make her feel better; he could see that despite her kindness toward him, she was suffering. His efforts only seemed to brighten her for a short time, and only superficially. Makay devoted himself to improving her life and making her smile whenever he could. By age fourteen, he became disillusioned with his once idolized older brother, realizing the foolishness and selfishness of his actions. He grew angry, seeing what his brother had put his mother through for the sake of revenge.

Because of his relationship with Kavia, the two families became close, and Kavia's parents symbolically became Makay's as well. Kavia's parents had wanted more children for years, but were unsuccessful. Makay helped to fill that hole in their lives to some extent. They taught Makay survival skills and how to hunt. Kavia had given Makay rides on her back when they were young, and this game soon became a skill and cherished pastime of Makay's. The community made a wooden spear for Makay and tack for Kavia when he was 14. He was trained in the use of his spear and the two became a skilled team; they were soon enlisted to do scouting and hunting for the village. Out of respect for Kavia, Makay learned to use pressure and verbal cues to "steer" her, but accepted that she had the final say in direction and speed.

Meanwhile, Makay's mother was loosing her battle with depression. She took ill and steadily deteriorated until her death in 2536, when Makay was 17. He was devastated, but managed to survive with the help of Kavia and the rest of the close-knit community. He took her last woodcarving, a loon, and made it into a necklace. The loss of his mother made staying in Pikatti more and more difficult as time went on. He was constantly reminded of the tragedies of his childhood. On top of that, Makay had developed a good amount of wanderlust while on his scouting trips, and longed to see more of the world. He thought he could help other people against the Virspera threat, so they did not have to suffer as he and so many like him had. Kavia didn't seem nearly as interested in leaving the settlement, and was saddened at the thought of not seeing her family. She could not, however, allow him to go alone. When confronted about their intentions, Kavia's parents were sad, but accepting. They told the two of them that "there need to be more people like you." With that, they left Pikatti to wander the world. Makay, though intimidated by the unknown, takes comfort in Kavia's companionship and protection. He will often carve wood and antler in his spare time.
