Description
A crow's call echos over a small village. The villagers halt their business and listen to the unnatural call. The Autumn crows, nestled in the trees, ruffle their feathers all at once. A traveler questions a villager about the event. The ragged peasant spits "It be that wild woman; that she-witch. She comes at night and steals our babes. She be seen dancin' with the devil in the moonlight. Where ever she steps the soil turns ungiving, not even a weed dare grow. The crows act as her eyes... always watching".One crow sits atop the chapel of the small village. It's head turns in curiosity at the traveler. It lets out a 'caw' which is repeated by the other birds, the caw is carried away deep into the trees. The aged priest rushes out of the chapel at the bird's call. "Get thee gone witch's spawn!" he throws a rock at the bird. The crow takes off into the overcast sky.
Night falls on the village. Families are locked tight within their house, babies well secured within their worried mother's arms. Children recite their prayers and return to their dream world. The Traveler opens the window of his rented room and gazes at the fall trees. He lifts his lantern to get a better view. No crows in sight. No watching eyes. Perhaps the villagers created this witch to explain their misfortunes.
Humming. A woman's humming. It grows closer and closer. The traveler searches for the source out his window. A figure is heading down the street. The man is determined to see who it is. If it is the witch, what would he do? He did not plan that far ahead. He runs into the street with nothing but his sleep clothes and a lantern.
He say's nothing as the figure comes closer. The humming is gentle and soothing. At last the figure is within the glowing light of the lantern. A woman stands there. Her face is hidden behind a black bird like mask. She wears nothing but a sheer robe made of various sized dark feathers and plumes. A baby is held within her arms and lets out a gentle coo. The woman looks down at the baby and places a finger on it's lips...'shh'.
A man runs down the street from behind the woman "She's got my babe!" The traveler recognizes the other man from his voice, it belongs to the ragged peasant whom he inquired about the witch to earlier. The ragged man picks up a stone from the ground and throws it at the woman. It hits her back. She hisses in pain and glares at the man. The baby cries out. The feathers of the woman's gown seem to rustle. She silences the babe as she did earlier and takes a deep breath. Her eyes glow as she exhales. A nightmarish 'caw' rips through the peaceful night. Feathers. Thousands of black feathers rain from the sky. The traveler drops the lantern with a startle. The witch disappears in the blackness. Her humming is all that remains.

Another mask I tried on at the party store. Coming up with the stories for them is twice the fun of just wearing them.
