Description
Done for my Ecology of Water class! We had to describe a fictional aquatic creature and illustrate it.This is the Giant Netdevil - Linophryne Yggdrasilifera
Description: Relative to the smaller Linophryne arborifera, the Giant Netdevil is a notably large anglerfish that can grow up to 5 feet in length (female). Their large filaments (often comprising over a third of the fishβs mass) are designed to imitate seaweeds that are often home to several smaller species of fish. Their bodies are elongated, with their lower jaw protruding much further than the upper. They are a dull brown color. Both the upper and lower jaw are lined with very sharp, inward-pointing teeth. Their bodies are quite bony, leaving a gaunt and angled impression. Their eyes are small, forward-facing, and a dull grey color. Fins are thin, ribbed, and mostly transparent. Males are much smaller, only a few inches in length, and resemble small guppies that cling to the bellies of females as parasites.
Size: Adults females are 3 - 5 feet in length. Males are much smaller, reaching only 2-6 inches. Males are technically not predators, but rather live parasitically off the females.
Range and Habitat: Found across the tropical and subtropical oceans in aphotic zones below 3,500 feet, some as deep as 8,000 feet. Most sightings in the western hemisphere.

Overall
Vision
Originality
Technique
Impact
You know me man, I'm a man of my word, I think the concept is awesome, although maybe you could have been a tad more original, It seems to me like you always have cool concepts, but you take it off something else, nothing wrong with that at all. However you never really take it to another level where things feel completely cool and original, again maybe not necessarily something wrong but something to look at and consider. The vision of this thing is pretty cool easily noticeable that it is based off an angler, I really like what you did instead of the light you have a spout-ish type thing, It's a tad unclear as to what he is spewing out or what exactly it is. The technique of it is pretty badass but hey it is you so no big surprise, maybe a little back lighting and lighter highlights on the cheeks, the best part of it in my opinion is the tail, very well done. The impact at fist was pretty spectacular however the quickly done background (I know it was purposely but still) I think because of the assignment you could have emphasized how it is in it's habitat. Overall really good jester, but I still think you can take it up another notch.

Legit yo! In regards to concept, not to cover my ass, but we were told to make something that was "plausable," as in might exist. This was for a science class, but still: you're probably right, that's no reason not to do something really original in concept. Next time I get an assignment like this I'll think more about that.
Thanks for the crit.

Thanks
No no, I got it figured out tho: he doesn't close his mouth, he just uses a super-quick intake of water to suck his prey down into his gullet! 8D
... but then maybe his teeth are superfluous... hmmm...

CookieBaker In reply to JesterCapp [2009-09-22 22:32:16 +0000 UTC]
It is an impressive gullet then. D: Does that mean he has vents to filter the food from he water?
Either way I adore this picture for some reason xD

Hmmm, yeah I guess he has the appropriate filters. Fish don't have the same "pipes" as humans, so I think it makes decent sense? But yeah. magic filters.

If you want to do comics, Savannah College of Art and Design is really solid. They have a well regarded sequential art program. If you want general illustration ability, Ringling College is also good. 8) Gotta put in a good word for my school!
So yeah both of those are not right next to NC, but... same area of the country at least? How far are you willing to move?

Savannah is in... Savannah which is in Georgia. About 5 hours from you. RCAD is in Sarasota FL, probably another 5 hours or so? So yeah, one could drive home on the holidays maybe, but you wouldn't wanna do it very often.
I don't know any good colleges that are closer.
