"Brother… Stop it…" I whispered softly into his ear as he planted more kisses down my neck and I ran my hands through his hair.
He sat up straight and cast his eyes down to the floor. I could tell that he was regretting what he had just done, what he had been doing for the past few years, and that he and I both knew that this was not meant to be. We were both blood-related siblings and to make matters worse- we were both males.
I opened my mouth to say something, then shut it once again when he picked up his shirt that was thrown to the other side of my room and left, slamming the door shut.
"What is going on?" I asked myself, as I stared at the ceiling with my fists clenched and later, punched the wall so hard, my knuckles were all red and blistered. Then again, things were not any different when Grandpa died ten years ago. We never had had any parents to boot.
It was a stormy Tuesday back then, Brother and I were both on the couch in the living room, his hands rubbing my back, my arms around his neck, our lips clashed and our tongues in a war of dominating the other. When the phone rang, he went to pick it up as I lay on the couch, catching my breath.
"Shit!" he yelled loudly, and I heard the phone hit something hard. Before I knew it, he had dragged me into his car and was driving us to the hospital. Grandpa Rome had been in a car crash, and it had been so bad that he had to be sent straight to the emergency room. I did not remember much afterwards- only Brother sitting in the corridor his hands clasped together and his eyes closed in a silent prayer.
He did not make it eventually. All I had left in the family was my brother since all the other relatives were so far away. Ever since, Brother had been taking care of me, but that was what family was all about, right? Being there for each other and all.
However, I knew that Brother and I shared something different. It was wrong, I knew. I could not deny the fact that I was in love with my brother and he could not deny the fact that he was in love with me. Who was to blame us though? We had no one but each other, we had no love from the ones around us but each other, and we had no one to teach us the right ways but to learn from each other. I sighed and stared at the clock. Five hours had already passed.
'I ought to apologize," I thought. I picked myself up from the bed and let my legs lead me to his room. It was strangely quiet- I had noted when I was outside his door. Music normally blasted, day and night, whether he was home or not, and when I walked by- I would know that this was home.
I saw him lying on his bed with his eyes closed. He did not seem to be moving. I went up to him and shook him hard. He did not stir at all. I panicked and checked for signs of heartbeat or breathing. None at all. My eyes caught the sign of bottles of pills on his desk. I swore under my breath as tears flooded my eyes.
I took the knife he always hid under his bed and slashed each of my damned wrist as I yelled, "How could you do this to me?" at the already dead brother of mine. I hugged him tight and asked him why he would leave me. I knew he would never but he did. Why?
I could feel myself falling sleepy. So I lay down beside him and snuggled close. We could both wake up tomorrow and everything would be fine. I knew that, because he had no one but each other and we would live for each other. Because that was what being family was all about, right?
