The detail in this is... well it's 24 hours worth. My goodness how do you stay at one painting that long. My max is 30 hours right now ;_;
The real skill here is keeping the detail without losing the overall realism. You have accomplished this masterfully.

How can I stick on the same painting for so long? *chuckles* I'm neurotic and obsessive?? Haha, it can be hard sometimes, for sure, but I'm also the primary breadwinner so that's added incentive :b
Thank you kindly, it's very much appreciated

Haha oops. I meant to say *at one area of the painting. I always get bored of fur and do something else!
If you spend 24 hours on one thing, how long does your highly detailed backgrounds take? uuugggg.
Yes I suppose supporting a family would be quite a good motivation, and if the client wants fur, fur they shall get.
From what I notice, the more years an artist does art, the longer they start to spend on their paintings.
One of my art teachers spends 100 hours on her works.... I can't even imagine!

To be honest, I used to spend more time on paintings than I do now. I used to easily spend 20-40 hours, while nowadays I tend to spend 5-25 - I work by commission, so it's generally cheaper to buy fewer hours' work :b

Ah so perhaps it just depends on the person.
Faster is better in my opinion!
The more you can do the more commissions you can take and stay competitive.

At the same time, I don't actually enjoy doing shorter commissions. I don't charge for the time spent talking to people, so rather than spending time organising files, references, character descriptions, payments and such from 10 different people for 10 two hour commissions, I'd rather do two 10-hour commissions. Plus I hate having to stop working on an image due to time/money restrictions when I feel like it's not good enough yet - terrible feeling :b

Ah that makes sense. Not more commissions then, but just a higher level of detail in a few commission is prefered.
I had a thought. If we artists charge by the hour, that can be an issue if an artist gets faster.
Maybe at a certain point it would be more economical to just have set prices.
That way we can still take on the same amount of commissions we used to, just be done sooner.
Lol I don't know it's getting complicated XD

I prefer charging by the hour, however - feels fairest. Sometimes projects end up being more complicated than we thought, and we can keep working until the client is happy with it. But yeah, the other way can feel like a nice bonus for the artist, hahaa - charging 10 hours' work, but being done at 6 hours, woo 4 hours' bonus :b

You really succeeded making this character appear noble. Your fur texture is gorgeous and I absolutely love that lighting!I can't believe you can make such realistic pictures of already extinct species...

I tell you what hon, every single one of these just gets more and more photo-realistic. National Geographic should give you a call, I swear. This just goes to show what you can do when you get a chance to go all out on something. 10/10 would recommend to a friend ;D

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it I don't get a chance to do super realistic stuff much anymore, so it's nice when I do <3 Glad you like it!

Gorgeous! It also reminds me of a character from a book I read a long time ago. The name eludes me, but it was about a boy who could speak to felines and ends up trying to help a family of lions get back to their home. But a lot of other crazy things happened too. It's cooler and more interesting than I'm making it seem...I wish I could remember the name!

Thanks!
Why does the smilodon remind you of the boy, do you think?

Romacat In reply to jocarra [2017-02-07 18:12:02 +0000 UTC]
Oh, it wasn't the boy it reminded me of! It was an actual sabertooth that was somehow revived or something. It's been so long since I read those books... But there was a male sabertooth character in it. The image you made reminded me what I imagined him looking like.
