Description
Charlie mashed the buttons on his controller in an attempt to avoid being strangled. It didn't work.Bleary eyed, he looked at the clock. 3 am. He'd been on the sofa playing games for thirty two hours now. Jess, Matt and Anthony were away finding themselves on some kind of road trip and hence weren't here to motivate him with their scorn, so the only things stopping him from getting the platinum trophy were his heavy eyelids and his propensity for being strangled.
There was a loud roar from outside, followed by an explosion and some car alarms. Charlie groaned as the house shook, and the HDMI cable disconnected from his TV.
Hauling himself off the sofa he busied himself in the forest of wires, swearing as he attempted to untangle them. He'd just plugged everything back in when a man crashed through the ceiling.
“Goddamnit,” said the man, handing Charlie a crossbow while he dusted off his suit. Rain was pouring through the hole in the roof. The man took the crossbow back and patted him on the back. “Sorry about the roof,” he said, and leapt out of the window onto the towering monster that was passing by.
Charlie didn't really know what to do about the smashed window, so he drew the curtains closed. As for the roof hole, Anthony was the only one who knew the landlord's number, so he poked an umbrella through and opened it so that it hung there and blocked the rain. It was a stunning display of lateral thinking that he was quite proud of.
He sat back down and picked up the controller. Ten minutes later a trophy popped for collecting five thousand pointless objects, and a sudden glow flashed behind the curtains as a dead monster crashed through the town hall.
“Yessss,” said Charlie, fistpumping as water started to drip through the light fitting.

Have you like, read every single piece this year? You're amazing, I don't think anybody else manages to get through half as many as you!

Not quite. I'm still missing quite a few. I'm trying to finish up while I still have the brain power to do it, but it's not looking so good.

This is actually really damned good! Way to be the only guy around that understood the challenge properly, haha. And I absolutely love that you tied it in the way that you did. Absolutely brilliant.

Thanks! It was a hard challenge, purely because it's a lot of research to do if you're not already familiar with the concept. It's not hugely well-known, and it's very misleadingly named. I just lucked out though, I'm sure the shoe will be on the other foot at some point!

Yep, this is set shortly before 'Dirk Strauss does his timesheet'

HOW ABSURD. You do manage to tie in the ol' vidyagames into these in such funny little ways, don't you? I enjoy the cross-universe fiction of it all as well, although I don't recall any giant monsters in any of distortified's texts. Then again I haven't read -all- of them I enjoyed this.

I'm such a nerd! The only distortified thing is the A, J, M mention. The monster bit is from this fav.me/d6ed41s The way I described what I was trying to do to Inkling was 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern but with Dirk Strauss instead of Hamlet'. It didn't come out as good as that description, but I still quite like it

Absurdist fiction is, well, absurd, but you managed it well (or at least I think you did, I'm still not entirely sure what it really is to be honest). But A, J & M on all fronts, and I see you managed to work a window into the equation! This was very funny on the whole, "Five thousand pointless objects".

To be honest I think the main reason people got confused was because the natural preconception is that absurd fiction is going to be humourous nonsense, when actually it's a completely different definition of absurd. I kind of lucked out because my dad had a degree in philosophy and his dissertation was on absurdism, so I kind of knew what I was working with.
I honestly think it would have been more useful to just link the wikipedia page for vanilla absurdism en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absurdis… before trying to explain absurd fiction. It's the kind of thing you need to learn from the ground up to have a proper grip on.

That's handy! I just went by the Wikipedia version, it seemed easiest. But even with that it was weird to work in all the elements, especially in a flash. How to convey this thing without coming right out and saying it. Still, no one can accuse the challenges of never introducing us to new things.

I'm glad you made the connection, I thought about mentioning in the artist comment but I thought that'd spoil the fun
