Truly amazing work!
Sadly, I'm just 19 years old with no extra pennies in my pocket. Perhaps one day I will have one of your exquisite works hanging in my home.

It truly has left me speechless.

I just have one question: For most of your pieces, do you use a photographic or other reference or is it all from your mind?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

joereimer In reply to treehugginhippie [2008-06-22 23:02:15 +0000 UTC]

A bit of both. I often have an idea in my head and then use a photo reference. However, for the majority of my pieces it starts out as a digital piece in that I manipulate the reference a LOT in photoshop to get it how I want it. With all my pieces, the finished product looks vastly different from the original reference.

treehugginhippie In reply to joereimer [2008-06-23 00:34:07 +0000 UTC]

Well thanks for letting me know! I am not a very creative person and therefore I have trouble making pieces without a strict reference. My trouble here is that I feel like a cheap artist, simply transferring a photo into pencil or paint equivalent. The thing is I would like to begin making more pieces similar to yours, acrylic on canvas, very thick impressionist-style paintings. However, I would need a strict reference and although it would look a lot different from a photo as it will be in paint, I feel as if I shouldn't be using references. DO you agree or disagree?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

joereimer In reply to treehugginhippie [2008-06-23 01:31:47 +0000 UTC]

I actually disagree. I don't think using a reference is any different than the impressionists who would go out and paint en plein air. Or Renaissance and Baroque painters, like Caravaggio, who would set up models in their studios and paint them while they held their poses. I mean, of course it's different in that we have the advantage that we can simply use a picture that isn't going to change or move, but even the master painters understand how important it is to take the guesswork out of it and paint from observations. Now with that said, I think it is extremely important to be choosing references that are creative and interesting. And like I said before, I go through quite a process to change the reference before hand so that it looks very different from the original. Anyway, I definitely wouldn't worry about the fact that you use references... the fact is that it still takes a lot of talent to take a reference and make it to a good piece of art.

Thanks This was definitely Monet inspired... at least for the lilies. I still want to try a lily piece that is a little more Monetesque, as far as composition.

Thanks man... a few of my students said they think it's my best piece. I personally like my sunflower one better, but I'm definitely happy with how this one turned out. I didn't really intend for the shoreline to be curved, but I love how it turned out. It really helps to give it more depth and I'm going to experiment more with it. When can we expect a new one from you?

ChrisPanatier In reply to joereimer [2007-11-20 00:40:00 +0000 UTC]

I think I mentioned that I'm a trial lawyer and I've literally been away from home (except weekends) for about 5 weeks. I live in Dallas and the case is in LA. Yippie. The last couple I've done were all weekend pieces. My sister has requested one for Christmas so I'm going to paint that this upcoming weekend (right after Thanksgiving). Thanks for asking.

On yours-the curve in the shoreline is a great effect on the overall composition--not to mention the depth. The blue is incredible.

I guess that does make it kinda tough to get work done with a schedule like that! People are always amazed at how many paintings I can do in a short period of time... but it's really not that hard when your evenings and weekends are free and you don't have any kids

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChrisPanatier In reply to joereimer [2007-11-20 04:52:26 +0000 UTC]

You know, I daydream about that type of time. Don't take it for granted. I hope someday I can have a steady schedule where I'm home more.

joereimer In reply to ChrisPanatier [2007-11-20 05:04:42 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately I think I do take it for granted. I daydream about making enough money with my art that I can just stay home every day and do that full time Actually, I think it's just the working mornings thing... I'm definitely not a morning person. My art classes are usually after lunch, so it would be nice to just teach the art. One day I suppose. Do you have any kids?

ChrisPanatier In reply to joereimer [2007-11-20 05:42:07 +0000 UTC]

I don't have kids. Married with two dogs. My biggest problem with them is keeping their omnipresent and ubiquitous hair out of my drying paint.

joereimer In reply to ChrisPanatier [2007-11-20 14:41:22 +0000 UTC]

That must be so frustrating! My problem is keeping my cat from jumping on my palette when I put it down... that and I'm afraid one day he's going to attack a canvas while I'm painting.
