Octopi are the most intelligent of all marine animals without backbones. The even get bored if held in captivity in aquariums without toys and puzzles to keep them occupied. As well as a central 'brain', each octopus has a smaller sub-brain for each of its arms to handle the complex instructions needed to manipulate them to perform intricate actions.
