That, and the waters behind them looks like a dried out lake bed.

Thank you!
- I do traditional paintings as well - maybe it influences somehow my pixel-art style

"crazy amount of work" i can imagine !
do you do a color sketch on a larger scale before going on to the *actual* coloring/pixel work or do you just sort of figure it out as you go?

You mean how do I work with palette? Anyway - my typical workflow looks like this:
Usually, I start with a composition sketch with basic colors and (filled) shapes. For this piece, I had line-art sketch - at least for portraits (but normally I work with shapes rather than lines)
I try to build part of the palette before painting - but no more than half of the planned colors - the rest I am adding during painting when I need them.
I do not rescale pictures, always work with fixed resolution from the beginning.
Sometimes I paint color sketch (digital painting in a different program or even on paper) to try some composition variants - but I never use them for an actual pixel-art picture.

heh - tablet advantage works only at the beginning - when you define basic shapes, composition. later at the stage of pure 'pixel-pushing' -mouse works surprisingly well.
when you get used to it ...
