I'm pretty sure that whatever DevArt was trying to impress people with, preventing them from accessing the site was probably not part of the plan.

A new "Eclipse" button appeared at the top of my DevArt console. No idea if it's there for everyone, or just a "lucky" few. I'd seen notifications of its arrival appear, recently, and deleted them out of sheer disinterest in any cosmetic bullsh*ttery. Thought I'd give it a quick prod to see what would happen. Regret followed. I couldn't access the site via normal means. After a bit of searching, I found mention that following a link directly to someone's journal would get me past whatever barrier had been thrown up. I did so, then toggled "Eclipse" off.
Normality restored.
Seriously, DA: I just want a place to show my silly cartoons and interact with people who want to pass comment on them. If I feel something isn't working, I'll let you know. Until then: kindly f**k off.

Eclipse goes away from the HTML5 standard and implements new proprietary bullsh*t code that only works in the latest browser versions on the latest operating systems.  The point of that BS code is to better invade your privacy and track you.  It was a one-way trip for me.  I had to borrow a PC with Windows 10 on it, login to my account, and turn off eclipse.  The ABSOLUTE MINIMUM respect developers should give to uses is an off switch that works using HTML3.  If they have forgotten how to write HTML, I would be happy to show them.

I don't know how long will it stay. As of right now, it's not there for everybody. I have it on my new main account, but not on this old account. On my new one where I'm active as a content creator, I tried Eclipse for a few days. I had to turn it off. Eclipse looks good but it doesn't function right. Certain things are missing, like the "feature in group" button, and many things are in a very different place than they where on the old interface.

I say they will launch Eclipse soon but not in a good state, and it will turn people away.

I got the switch too, but for me it's a toggle.  Took one look at it, shrugged my shoulders, and immediately switched back.

Eclipse is nothing but a disaster, and they got rid of the "you are now leaving DeviantArt" page (which is sorta helpful) AND the "Download" feature, which is what I REALLY liked!
Can't we get something dedicated to old school DA? I hate this new age bullshit!

Wait ? Removed the 'Download' option on picture, that people could CHOOSE to enable/disable ?
That can't be right, let me check random pictures... No, that's there for most pictures I checked. People can turn that on/off on pictures they submit.

I saw the button as well, but didn't click on it because, honestly, I can't remember the last time a major website did a redesign that didn't end up making it exponentially worse for anyone who doesn't use a tablet or smartphone. Looks like I dodged even more of a bullet than I thought I would!

From what I've have been able to gather Eclipse is a redesign of DA and they are Beta testing a new site. Because it is in beta right now they are only inviting new deviants and select deviants to try the new site out and gather feed back to further develop the site.

More info here also there is a feed back link is provided in the entry.

BETA TEST: DeviantArt Eclipse

As you may know, DeviantArt has been long working on a big update of our site and overall user experience. It’s been over a year of brainstorms, planning, research, interviews, testing, and more, and now we’re gearing up for a full Eclipse!

The time has finally come: we’re excited to announce DeviantArt Eclipse to beta testers. Take a look at the new design and some of the new features on our promo site. How To Try DeviantArt Eclipse

Now it’s time for you all to experience it! All beta testers have been enabled with DeviantArt Eclipse. To make the switch simply click on the More menu on the top navigation and select “Try DeviantArt Eclipse.”You can switch back to the old site by clicking on the avatar icon and selecting “Back to Old Version.”

Explore What’s New

We can’t wait for you to explore some of our awesome new features! We recommend starting off by selecting Header Art in order to personalize your Profile and make a “wow!” first impression.

After you’ve done that, elevate your art by choosing a deviation background (Core Members have more background options to select from as well). Expand your watch list and community outreach by browsing status updates and polls. Experiment with the new Love Meter to indicate how much a certain work of art matches your personal taste. Go on and explore, Beta Testers!

Reporting Bugs, Feature Requests, and Feedback

DeviantArt Eclipse is still in development. You will likely encounter bugs and unfinished features. We need your help to test out our new features! If you do find any issues, please let us know.

Submit a bug or feature request (submit to this form as many times as you’d like!)Please try to include as much information as possible, such as browser info, OS info, screenshots, links, reproduction steps, what you expected to see versus what you actually experienced, and anything else you think will help describe your issue. Please do not contact DeviantArt Support about Eclipse-related bugs or issues — we’d like to collect all bugs and feedback though this form.Submit your overall feedback about DeviantArt Eclipse

Known Issues & In-Development Features

Here are some of the major known issues we are aware of and actively working on:

We are still working on the favouriting and collecting experience. Please share your feedback! It’s not yet possible to include Literature and Journal thumbs in comments or galleries within Journals.Icon codes are in development.Sharing a thumbnail in a Journal or comment using a link (or :thumb: code) is not yet possible.Thumbnails of pixel art, stamps, and small images have some display issues. Literature thumbs do not include preview text.Various feedback notifications (such as certain types of replies and deviation mentions) are not yet completed and may display as an error.Feedback will sometimes get out of order after scrolling through many notifications.Minor formatting issues in new Journal text editor.Bio and personal information are not yet editable on Eclipse.Gallery Subfolders and Gallery Stats will be temporarily unavailable as we rebuild them in the future. The mobile web version is not yet available.Comment permalinks don't include links to the original content or parent comment. Submitting Journals to Groups is not yet possible. While creating or editing Commissions, the Points-currency conversion is not being calculated properly. (This is just a visual bug; the price of Points is not changing.)

An Eclipse PetitionThis probably won't do any good, but I'm going to try it anyway; so gather ’round, everyone! Let's let our voices be heard! Please share this journal with others. Comment here to "sign". Don't comment a bunch times, and don't tag any of the developers yet. After this journal gets enough comments, I'll try to tag as many site developers as I can in a single comment asking them to read and consider this. I know people are probably already doing things like this, but the more people speak up, the better chance we have at actually being heard.
So my petition this: that we keep both Eclipse and the original DeviantArt. It's a very simple solution that will make everyone happy. Those who like Eclipse may use Eclipse, and those who like the "old" DeviantArt may use the old DeviantArt. In fact, Eclipse can be the default, with the old layout being an option that must be turned on by individual users. It's obviously something the devs are capable of, given how that is pretty much the way

Eclipse worked for me on a technical level, but I fucking HATE it.  The interface is completely different, it feels like a cheap knock-off of youtube's home page (which for the record I think sucks) and you have to go through a bunch of bullshit to see the artwork and other uploads of people who you watch.  If you want to give us new features that's great, but don't remake your entire site into a stupid style over substance, unintuitive mess with a totally different UI that people who have been here over a decade will have to re-learn.

There's a subtle difference between discreetly adding a function that allows users to add animated gifs to comments, and adding a bug that prevents users from accessing the site.
