Description I haven't worked on much Star Trek in quite some time, but I've been meaning to go back and update a few of my older designs. So I decided to start with the Longbow Runabout. Hopefully I'll have better luck this time with the side view.
Also, rather then trying to add a bunch of color which I'm not terribly good at, I though I'd change things up a bit and go for a sort of blue-print on graph paper look. I'm still trying to get the look right so that the graph paper doesn't distract from the drawing itself.

Inspired by Data's scout from Insurrection, the Longbow is little more then a warp core with a set of impulse engines and phaser cannons strapped to it. It suffers from similar problems the Defiant Class originally experienced during operational testing, in that it's way too powerful for a vessel its size. The horizontal warpcore is designed to create large amounts of power very quickly, at the cost of efficiency and warp speed performance. Because of it's speed and distance limitations, the runabout is limited to short duration missions, usually attached to planetary or starbase defense. They don't see a lot of action aboard starships, because so few starships can more then a couple of them. On it's own, the Longbow can generally handle threats matching it's size, however in packs of four or more the Longbow is deadly even to ships of the line.

The Longbow isn't a fighter, much in the same way the Defiant isn't a warship, in name only. In reality, the Longbow is a highly mission specific vessel, designed primarily for defense.

Here's the original version, for those interested in the changes, which looking at it now gives me a few ideas for changes to the new version.

Yeah, that would be great, though unfortunately I won't be building it in 3d any time soon. I simply don't have the skills to even try it. There are far too many curves for me to take on. If it had lots of flat surfaces and angles, then I'd be all over it, but that isn't the case. Maybe someone else with more 3d skills then me can take it on.

Nice work, mate. Love this design. As far as the blueprint/schematic look, I've always liked that better when dealing with 2D concept drawings. Guess it just makes it seem more realistic, but that's just me. Keep it up.
