Description
This is from back in 1993, while I was working on a TV series called "I'll Fly Away." Sam Waterston was our star, and after a discussion about "matching close-ups," I decided to pull a prank on Sam.The idea actually came to me when I was being fitted for glasses and saw a "pupilometer" on the optician's desk. It's a little ruler that measures the distance between a person's pupils. I asked her where I could get one, and she gave me that one!
The next episode of the show, when it was time for a closeup of Sam, I pulled out my pupilometer, held it up to Sam's face and asked him to look straight ahead. Being a bit of a cynic, he asked me what the hell I was doing! I explained that this was a new technique for getting better close-up matches, as it was taking the subject's pupilary distance into account. "What a bunch of bullshit!" he said. I told him no, it was true, and the technique was described in the latest issue of The American Cinematographer.
He said he would like to see it, so that weekend I wrote it (on my Commodore 64, by the way) so that it looked like a page from that magazine. Then I stuck the printed document into a real copy of the magazine, and Xeroxed it. The resulting page looked, for all the world, like a Xerox of a real page in The American Cinematographer.
I took several copies with me the next shoot day and gave one to Sam, who thanked me, stuck it into his pocket, and said he would read it later. I passed out the other copies among the crew with no explanation.
The crew was hoodwinked! They all thought it was real! When Sam came back on the set he didn't mention the article, as he had not yet read it. Overhearing some of the buzz on the set about it he read it the next time he was off the set.
When he returned, he told me "This is the greatest hoax I have ever seen!" My work was rewarded.

that's COOL that you played a trick on Sam Waterston! He's really good, I like him! who else do you know that's famous?!

Part of the coolness was that while everyone else on the crew thought the article was real, Sam instantly recognized it as a hoax!
I've worked with quite a few folks that you would recognize, I guess. Look through the films on this IMDB page [link] and you can sort out some of them from the film titles.

OMG you know LOADS of stars!!! that's AWESOME!!! Have you made friends with anyone famous over the years?

JosephThomas In reply to anextraordinarygirl [2008-03-14 23:10:29 +0000 UTC]
Well, I've met loads of 'em, I guess.
As for friendships, they last only as long as the shooting, despite occasional promises to the contrary. Which doesn't really matter, I guess. I have found "stars" to be no more interesting than anyone else. Who needs Reese Witherspoon's friendship when I have yours?
That may sound like a wise-crack, but believe me, you are far more interesting than Ms. Witherspoon.

wow you just made my day! Because in particular, I really like Reese Witherspoon. I'm not a giant fan of stars to be honest, because yeah, they are just people after all. Beautiful people, but just people. I am ocmpletely fascinated by the world of film. My love, as I may have mentioned in the past, has an independent film company, and I can't wait to hang around when they shoot sometime,. and even to help
its all such an amazing process to me.

If you like Reese, here's a photo of her with some fat guy (I've lost 30 lbs since this photo) that was taken for a friend of my wife, also a fan. [link]
I'm sure you'll have fun when you get on a movie set!

Did you happen to catch the gag on the professor's name? I tried so hard to make it not be obvious that most people completely overlook it!
To save you the trouble of opening the document, I'll tell you that his name was Dr. Robert U. Kiddon.

Thanks!
I was using GeoPublish, which was pretty amazing considering the platform it ran on. And would you believe that I used to write technical articles for a computer magazine called "GeoWorld?" It was all about the Geos system, if you remember that. I also wrote a few little applications for Geos, and some kind of printer driver. (If you google for "geos getitwrite" you'll find that my program is still available on the Internet!)
By the way, I had a $1200 Postscript laser printer hooked up to my $250 C-64. Geos was able to output in Postscript, so you didn't get those jaggy characters that you would get on (remember these????) a dot-matrix printer.

I do remember Geos even though I never had it. I remember that many people thought Geos was the future. I loved my Commodore 64. I had so much fun with it! I definitely remember the old dot-matrix printers. They were amazing and I thought they were great - although the quality was horrible.
I was really upset when Commodore went broke.
