I believe the intention was to make it like a true Werewolf. Human-Wolf Hybrid. Notice the ears, they are wolf-like but in the position that our ears are in. Also look at the face, it bares some similarities to our own: The eyes and the overall face shape. Although it may seem bat-like to the untrained eye this is really a true masterpiece.
