HISTORY A free-spirited, vagabond mare, and a nomadic stallion passionately embraced each other in the dark of the night. When morning arrived, the mare and stallion amicably parted ways after a few moments of playful flirting. Terrified and alone, the mare gave birth to a filly that she'd cursed her misfortune of carrying. However, the mare immediately fell in love with her daughter the moment she laid eyes on her; any thoughts to abandon the foal disappeared in an instance. But that also meant that the mare wasn't prepared with a list of names which caused the filly to be dubbed with a "very original" name: Red.

Red and her mother were extremely close. Their explorations brought them across many incredible sights. All the while, the mare taught her daughter how to survive the unpredictable world. The two were perfectly content with their wayfaring lifestyle. Any stallion that stepped too close earned scrapes and bruises for their trouble. Unfortunately, when Red was around a year in age, a stallion overpowered her mother and claimed her as his own. Only a yearling, and not wanting to abandon her mother, Red joined a herd for the first time.

It was horrible.

The stallion was stern and crass. He seemed to find pleasure in breaking the wills of his mares, chipping away at their wanderlust and bright personalities. The herd stayed within the confines of the desert and hardly moved far: a vast contrast to the everchanging sights Red was used to. Red tried to slip away but each time a glaring mare would find her and drag her back.

She found a companion in a rambunctious colt that had been born shortly after their arrival. Like her, his antics earned his mother judging eyes from the herd mares. The two acted like siblings. Red would talk about the world outside and the desert and how she yearned to be free once again. Before being chased away by his possessive father, the colt promised to come back for her: that together they'd roam free and uncover the mysteries of the world.

That day never came.

Red had kept her low, waiting for the day she'd be broken free. When her mom approached her with a worried expression, though, she realized she had to break free herself. Her mother had distracted the stallion from Red for as long as she could. However, Red was older now and the stallion sought to finally claim her as his own. So, they waited for the opportune time to escape which eventually presented itself in the form of a rattlesnake. The two quickly discussed an escape plan, to flee together while the others were distracted by the venomous snake, but tragedy bit. A second rattlesnake had emerged from a hole and struck her mom, fangs injecting their awful venom into her.

The mare begged for her daughter to run. At first, Red refused to leave her side. After everything they'd gone through, how could they separate like this? But her mother protested and shoved her away. Red tried, again and again, to stay by her mother's side but, eventually, her mother's teeth dug weakly into her shoulder. Her brown eyes pleaded with her to leave. And so, she did. Red ran and only looked back once; the sight of her mother laying limply in the desert sands imprinted into deep her memories.
