Yes, I think so.. I tried the first steps in your tutorial and it worked very well.. I just couldn't figure out the thing with the gradient tool

1. create a path using the pen tool
2. right click -> create merge
3. pick a transparent gradient
4. play with it

i tried it. but the result i got is totally different, its crappy.
i change the brush size to 2 and use ur technique but it turned out just like an ordinary line, as you can here [link]
well, maybe its just stupid me. i'm surely certain that i have followed ur guide.

Hm.. are you using photoshop? And did you mark 'simulate pressure'? If that won't help maybe try and restart the brushes
