Sleeping At Last - Indian
The war required all kinds of skills and strength: while the fighters and healers made up the most important section of wolves, there were still the young and weak left in all this, taskless, unskilled or just too weary to participate in the battle. They were left in the most secure place of Xassan territory with pretty much nothing to do but wait, worry and wail about the hardships of the situation... But even in those turbulent times there was a demand for a distraction, something to take away the toil and fear, something to fight the reality with fantasy.
Illsa, as she always did, chose to submerge herself with the world of dreams and make-believe, where the war was far away and what remained was peace, prosperity and future. Freedom, certainty... She wasn't the only one seeking distraction and comfort though - so, reluctantly, she chose to share her comfort.
She remembered aba's stories about brave wolves, fearsome beasts, love and hate, revenge, death, life, birth... As she spoke, quietly first and then with more and more emotion as her curious audience grew larger, the legends of old, long-forgotten time and place filled the heads with anticipation and joy, worry and wonder. "Someone told me once that there lived a wolf by the name Batur, which meant "hero", and his long-lasting nemesis, Kuturuk, the bear whose name meant "tail" for he had a long one and its tip burned with fire causing destruction and death upon the land. Once Batur wed a beautiful she-wolf named Deneva, meaning "one who remembers", and on the night of their wedding two falcons flew over their heads, which was a good sign to the wolves' tribe. But the next day the air was filled smoke, and the world went dark, for Kuturuk awoke from his slumber, hungry and raging, burning everything in sight. The beautiful Deneva got gravely injured as Kuturuk's fire poisoned the ground and the sky, so the courageous and vengeful Batur faced the bear in the battle, with the falcons by his side who tried to tear Kuturuk's eyes... That battle, they say, lasted for three moons..."
In the moment, it seemed, the tale came to life, unraveling before them.
