Heathers The Musical - Lifeboat
I float in a boat
In a raging black ocean
Low in the water
With nowhere to go
The tiniest lifeboat
With people I know
~
She was restless, for the whole Skuld had been summoned to a gathering before the Jarl. She was restless because of so many changes happening: few wolves disappearing without a notice, the weather, despite the coming of summer, had been only worsening…
She was restless, for she felt a storm was coming.
There she stood among many, keeping close to her brother’s tall figure, nervous if the reason for this assembly had been anything bad. Something in her gut told her this wasn’t going to be a small case, but she dared to remain optimistic despite the feeling. Maybe… they were having more guests from the neighbouring packs? Or they would discuss the future celebration of approaching Elderblot?
The Jarl’s heavy expression, however, seemed to disprove these speculations. Things have changed since the war, it rang in Illsa’s ears. This couldn’t be the beginning of positive news, no. Many things had indeed changed since those hellish moons trapped in their own home and then going to war against the pale Draugrs; she had changed as well. She grew up and began to set that past aside, building a new and better life among the wolves she loved and cared about. Her gaze briefly wandered to those beloved faces in the crowd: her brother, her mentor, her friends, the pups, now grown wolves she came to adore so much. However, few of these familiar faces seemed to be missing… especially one of a fiery reddish Vanguard. Did they miss the announcement or had other business to do first?
As her thoughts wandered, a name was caught in the corner of her ears. Cordelia…. and… something she wasn’t sure she caught on?
Did… The Jarl mention…. exile?
Exile of Cordelia?!
~
Cold, clammy, and crowded
The people smell desperate
We'll sink any minute
So someone must go
The tiniest lifeboat
With the people I know
~
A chaotic cacophony of noises filled the crowd; a wave of gasps, murmurs, objections and alike rattled the Skuld, all drowning in questions and suspicion. Illsa found it hard to focus, hard to make out words and Jarl’s speech as her heart sank further and further at the realisation. It pounded with the wild rhythm of the voices, making her hackles raise and tail tuck between legs. What was happening? How did it come to this? Why, spirits, why was this happening?
“No!” she yelped perhaps too audibly, pathetically, unconsciously, as always a few moments too late to react to what had been said. Jaw hanging open and throat suddenly awfully tense, she found it impossible to get her voice out. Words just… stuck. She made an effort to focus on Valera’s speech, absorbing everything she had said further, but not understanding any better… As if the whole world was a blur, and the only clear pictures that remained belonged to the raven-pelted Jarl - and a phantom of Cordelia, standing aside, watching the scene unfold. It was a surreal image, one that made Illsa shake to the very core.

Everyone's pushing
Everyone's fighting
Storms are approaching
There's nowhere to hide
~
She found it hard to believe that Valera’s words weren’t distorted just like these feverish visions. Cordelia would never…. They were tempered, this was true, but never outright malicious or rude, especially to the youth. Memories of playing with the reddish wolf as a small and shy pup, sharing quiet conversations after the war came flooding in, - they never treated her with anything less than kindness and sympathy, despite Illsa’s insecurities. Something she was forever grateful for. No, this didn’t seem right, something wasn’t right… “Rallying children against the Jarl?” However bitter they must have been about their declined promotion, Cordelia would never…
“But… why?” Her voice came out barely audible amongst the whisperings, before she made an effort to speak louder, trembling. “S-shouldn’t… there at least be some sort of… trial? For their mistakes?” If there were any. “Shouldn’t… they…” Say goodbye to those they had left there.
Alas, she wasn’t sure anyone heard her.

If I say the wrong thing
Or I wear the wrong outfit
They'll throw me right over the side
~
Illsa glanced at Gale, shock, confusion and suspicion in his expression. The news greatly troubled everyone around, as the pale Sage was catching everyone’s reactions, listening closely. Poor family… They didn’t even have the chance to properly say goodbye to their banished child! Banished for the crimes no one even witnessed, except Jarl! And now, Cordelia was to be chased from the home that spoke of companionship, Balance, Honour, but regarded none of it. How long had the young Vanguardian, now a Grun, been suffering in silence before something broke and made them… A worm of doubt kept nagging her - it was a sickening feeling. Something wasn’t said.
This wasn’t all of it.
Illsa leaned on Gale for comfort, desperately fighting the sting of tears threatening to shed. She was ready to burst right there and then, had it not been for the presence of the entire pack. Breaths came short and hollow, - what could they possibly do? What could they say or do to make the Jarl change her mind and let Cordelia in again?
Spirits, why did you let this happen? The young Sage found no answer. Fate had been playing with them as of late, and there was no telling if Eir had simply left them or if the Draugrs took hold. What she knew for certain, this wasn't the entire truth.
And she would have to find the rest of the story, somewhere and somehow.

I'm hugging my knees
And the captain is pointing
Well who made her captain?
Still, the weakest must go
The tiniest lifeboat
Full of people I know
~
Well, yeah, Illsa is doing fine, why are you asking?
