Description The army from the stars was met with heavy resistance. The defenders of man inflicted many wounds upon their metal foe, only to be overrun in the end. How does anyone defeat an enemy unafraid of fire, injury, or even death?
The fallen Angel, one of billions, has served its purpose. It carries its broken body to the final place of rest. Only a part of a whole, it will not be missed. Eventually the mechanical being will slip into darkness... alone yet unafraid.

The scene is from a story i've been working on over the years, with the hope to eventually make it into a video game. Other works in the same story include "Vulcarus Wallpaper" [link] "The Throneroom" [link] and "Animated Bicopter" [link]

This is one of the most complex CG scenes i have ever done. The robot has over 100 moving parts, and is fully rigged for motion capture. The final product was well above 1,000,000 polygons, and used 3 photometric area lights. None of the textures use images as maps, this is all procedural.

The final rendered image was in PNG format, (meant for print) but I put it into JPG format to post on devart (as the PNG was well over 26 megs) The render was performed using two 1.5 ghz pentium 4 machines running 3D Studio Max 6 with Backburner 2, as well as an old AMD K6 machine as the file destination. The render, while a distributed render, took over 6 hours. (used the Mental Ray rendering engine to process the depth of field focus effects faster)

"Fallen Angel" as posted here, is a raw render. I plan to touch up various things in Photoshop CS before printing. It will be my main entrance in the Scholastic Art Competition this year.
