Description A tutorial on how to use color in Manga Studio.

To view, download, unzip and open "Tutorial.html"

It should be noted that this tutorial was created and intended for use with the first version of Manga studio EX or Debut (now referred to as 3.0).
Unlike 3.0, Manga studio 4.0 and 5.0 are designed for using color, thus the methods in this tutorial would not be necessary.

FAQ:
Q:Can I use this tutorial with Manga Studio Debut?
A:Yes! The only difference between the two (as far as this tutorial goes) is that Manga Studio Debut doesn't offer you the use of Vector layers. You will just use Raster Layers instead.

Q:What is the difference between Manga Studio Debut and Manga Studio EX?
A: They're the same program, however Debut has fewer tools than EX. The big difference being that Manga Studio EX allows for the use of Vector layers, which gives you more options when it comes to editing your lines without having to completely redraw them.

Q:I can't fill a shadow/space with color without flooding the whole page.
A: On the paint bucket's tool properties window, make sure the "Browse Several:All Layers" box is checked.

Q:If I don't use anti-alias my lines look all choppy!
A:They may look choppy when zoomed in close up, but I promise you, if you worked larger than your intended piece, once you resize it for the web & what not, it will look smooth and crisp. (I never use anti-alias on my lines.)

Q:How did you make the gradients?
A:In 3.0 you need to use tones to make gradients. (It's not covered in this tutorial sorry.)

Q:Where is the eyedropper tool? How do I select colors?
A: In 3.0 there is no eyedropper tool. 3.0 was not designed for coloring, thus you need to use this method and (unfortunately) manually select all your colors.

Q:Can I draw something in Manga Studio then color it in Photoshop?
A:Yes! When saving, just go to File>Export and where it says File Type select 'Photoshop' format.

Q:My colors are showing up as monotone gradients. (Think this only applies to 4.0 and up)
A:Chances are you were on a black and white layer when you tried to select a color and thus the program automatically tried to convert the color you wanted to a a B&W tone.

Q:Where can I download/get Manga Studio?
A:Manga studio is owned by Smith Micro and can be purchased in most stores that carry computer software, or physically and digitally through SM's website [link]

Thank you so much for putting the Q&A at the bottom, definitely saved me some time.Β

There is no way to take something from MS->GIMP->SAI though huh?

(format wise)

I'm not familiar with Gimp or Sai, but I'd assume they handle regular file types like JPEGs right? If so, you could use the File > Export option, however in doing so you would be losing your layers.

Yea that is what I was worried about, losing layers.

Thank you for responding!

NP. Sorry Definitely check the export options to see if there may be a compatible file type. (I would check for you but I no longer have this version installed.)
Happy art-making to you!

You most likely opened the archive without extracting first. (I've been guilty of that too.)

Make sure it was extracted THEN open the HTML file. No images are actually missing. If you read the HTML document or use Chrome's Developer Console, you'll find no errors relating to missing content. Likely this was Kalisama's decision to not use files, or had several takes of the same thing.

Kalisama Β Thank you for the tutorial. I should be getting the program (4 Debut) in Thursday with my new tablet.

Kalisama In reply to TheFlagCourier [2014-02-20 18:12:36 +0000 UTC]

Oh my gosh thank YOU for advising!
I thought I had replied to this problem, but I must have accidentally deleted through. *so sorry*
I think the issue they're seeing is actually because the numbering of the files is off (I think I had deleted some unnecessary images when I was finalizing my tutorial). But you are completely correct, if it's extracted properly there is nothing missing from the tutorial itself.

I hope you enjoy your new tablet and Manga Studio, and that this tutorial can be of some help to you! (BTW, if you like 4, 5 is even better!)

That's really helpful, I've been struggling to figure out how to colour with this programme. It's not very intuitive and the help section is not much good. I do like the line tools, but it will certainly be useful to know how to use the rest of it.

I wish I'd read the FAQs before importing my piece into Elements for colouring. lol I just saved it and worked on a JPEG, which was not very good. Still, it's better than the last one.

I'm having trouble at step three with the fill bucket. Do I have to make an outline through my already drawn black lines?
Ex: I outline where i want the shadows to be but when i fill them in the whole page gets filled.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kalisama In reply to sobewon [2013-02-13 13:01:51 +0000 UTC]

You're probably only filling that top layer.
Make sure you have the box checked on the bucket tool where it says something like 'browse all layers' (sorry I don't have my program with me right now otherwise I could be a bit more specific)
If that doesn't help, then check to see if there's any little gaps in your outline.

it should work for debut if you use only raster layers. (debut doesn't allow vector layers)

Horizon-IV [2011-07-13 20:15:23 +0000 UTC]

Great tutorial!

one question though:

The 2 colors on the layers aren't 100% opacity. though om pretty sure all transparency tools are on 100% (100% not transparent)
The 1st color is at like 70% opacity, and the second one at like 50% opacity it seems.
Is there anyway to change this?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kalisama In reply to Horizon-IV [2011-07-14 06:04:44 +0000 UTC]

? I'm not entirely sure what's going on. (Sorry I no longer have version 3 to toy with.)
Generally this happens when your layer settings are off. (usually the program will convert a color selection to a gradient shade of black by changing the opacity of the layer/color.)
My advice would be to check your layer settings first, and then make sure you have selected solid black & solid white as your drawing colors, and THEN be sure you have pressed the color viewer button on the layer pallet, and selected your colors though the layer properties window.
